First, yes, I have to use WMP.

I have a collection of .avi files which I copied from a DVD (yes, legally). They're short video clips which we use for demonstration purposes. Now... I copied the files myself (using AoA DVD Ripper) from a DVD I made myself (using a LiteOn 5055) from TV shows I recorded (using Sky+) on THIS VERY COMPUTER, which makes this problem quite strange.

Almost all of the files play fine in Windows Media Player. This is odd, as they ALL worked fine when I ripped them, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to check their quality. Four of the files don't work any more - they return an error code of "C00D1199: Cannot play the file" - except they DO work in Windows Media Player Classic...

What the smeg is going on?

First the obvious, have you tried a reboot?

Also, is it only these 4 files? or are other avis (not related to the DVD rip) now not working either?

Have you tried checking the MS Knowledge Base?

Are you using XP? SP1? SP2?

Have you tried reinstalling the codec(s)?

My gawd, Famine with a problem...Now I have seen everything!

Yes.

Just these four.

Have you tried checking the MS Knowledge Base?

Yes - it claims that the file type isn't supported (nonsense), or that the file is being used in a way the player doesn't like (also nonsense, as it plays others in exactly the same way) or that the Codec used isn't compatible with the Player (nonsense again, as the others encoded at the same time work fine).

XP SP2.

Not only that, but I've also updated to the latest versions of the DivX Codec.

In that case, it sounds like the files have somehow been corrupted. Do you happen to have a copy of PowerDVD or similar on hand that you can try them with? I had this problem with a few files that were ripped from a DVD that I had, and didn't have the original avis for.

The files all play fine in Windows Media Player Classic... That's why the problem is odd.

Download G Spot, open one of the files that plays properly and one of the files that doesn't in G Spot and see if there are any differences visible.

Well, this is beyond my level of expertise. Next?

Well, why not just play them in Windows Media Player Classic then?

I did a quick check on Google and there are many people that have experienced the same problem. Unfortunately, I didn't encounter any solutions.

Have you tried to copy the files and play them on another PC? If it works on another PC, then perhaps re-installing Windows Media Player might do the trick.

I wouldn't think that that would work in this case, as WMP plays all bar 4 of the files. But I may be wrong.

They play in Classic because classic has no extra restrictions on Codecs that the MP10 does, you can download extra codecs for classic but not for the Visualiztions extravaganza. The files should all use the same codec if they are the same extension & ripped in the same manner. But even subtle differences in file attributes can cause the extra filtering of Media Player to come into play.

You could; try ripping them again, or split them & get them to play sequentially, as this might workaround some of the overprotective inbuilts of the main player.

AVI is practically unscrambled so toy w/ it & you might fit it into your player of presentation.

Because mine's a standalone and the others are networked - I can't install Classic on the networked machines.

Oh, and Classic has to load the whole file before it plays any of it, unlike 10 which buffers as it's playing.

You're using WMP. I get this kind of crap all the time. Then when it tries to go online to download the codec it needs it can't find it.

I would suggest converting it to a different file type somehow. WMP seems to only do this stuff with.avi files.

That's what it seems to me. How old is the DVD?

I created and ripped the DVD in the same day, a month ago.

Depending on the quality of the disc, it could have been corrupted, especially if it's around the outer edge. WMP is usually the first program to whine about anything. If you could get the "manufacturer ID" of the disc, you could probably google it to see if they're reliable. Another reason could be that the hard drive has a couple bad sectors, or it's breaking. Well, anyway I don't have a solution.

ok, all i know is that PCs always have problems like this (i'm not really satisfied with my PC). in the future, an APPLE is the best choice of computer you can go for 👍

That was not the issue

They DID work, but now they don't. The only thing I can suggest is re-ripping the files, and see if they work. Just curious, but do you have the original files used to create the DVD still? If you do, why can't you just use them?

Any luck getting it working Famine?
