Weird problem I'm having on my 60GB 'Fat' PS3 which I've had for a while now. It works fine, starts up fine, but when I go to start a game, the screen goes blank and nothing happens, I have to turn my PS3 off from the power switch on the rear. This has happened with 2 PS3 games and a PS2 game. The first game I experienced this on (Borderlands) actually began to load it froze on the first loading screen (With the Eridian symbol, for those who know). Also it's probably worth mentioning that if I have a disc in my PS3 when I start it up, it won't show up on the XMB, I have to eject it then put it back in for it to work. I first thought it was a problem with my blu-ray reader, but then I thought it was something to do with the HDMI cable. But now I haven't a clue, does anyone have any ideas?

My 60GB has started doing that with the Disc not showing up in the XMB, but then again I have YLOD 13X already! The initial problem sounds like a hand shaking issue with the HDMI to your TV, try changing the cable (if you have one) or use the original RCA or Component cables if you have them. I have noticed before my "Fatty" does the famed YLOD, the screen will flicker or glitch a few times before it fails. I would highly recommend backing up any saved game data, music, photos, or videos at this point.

The first signs of a dying Blu Ray drive is the disk not showing up in the XMB and games failing to load or freezing. Its something like can go gradually and the 60GB were prone to poorly designed lasers. This is exactly what happened to me and a few days later the drive was dead.

Well, seems like it is the Blu-Ray drive, thanks for the diagnosis. As for the repair, is it worth trying a Blu-Ray drive cleaner or something like that?

Also, just to add, I have had the same problem with a PS2 game, I didn't realise this had anything to do with the Blu-Ray drive, or does it?
