I didn't know whether this should be in the comedy corner or here. I found the sheer stupidity of some of the people in the article to be extremely humorous, but then again, people died and got injured. Anyways, you know who won this year's Darwin Awards

Kite-flying event claims 13 lives
From correspondents in Lahore
February 07, 2005

THIRTEEN people have been killed and more than 500 injured during an annual kite-flying festival in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore.

Seven people with severe head injuries died in the city's General Hospital alone, and about 220 people were admitted with a variety of injuries including broken bones, hospital officials said.

The two-day festival of Basant, marking the start of spring, began with thousands of revellers perched on rooftops.

Two teenagers were killed when they fell from a roof, and two more were killed when a car hit them while they were trying to catch a stray kite, police said.

A man was killed by a stray bullet, while another was electrocuted when metal wire used to fly a kite became draped over live electric lines.

Officials said more than 300 injured people were taken to four other hospitals in different parts of the city.

Meanwhile, the festivities continued amid chants of "Bo Kata" (We have cut) as rival kites came down. Victory was celebrated with drumbeats, firecrackers and often firing in the air.

The celebrations also included concerts and dinner parties.

President Pervez Musharraf and his wife Sehba had visited Lahore for Basant, officials said. He watched from the roof of a historic building in the old part of the walled city.

Officials said more than 50,000 people from across the country had arrived in Lahore along with 10,000 other Pakistanis residing in the Middle East, Europe and the US to celebrate the occasion with friends or relatives.

Hundreds of shops and stalls across the city were selling kites, while many multinational companies distributed free kites carrying their insignia.

Police said more than 50 people had been detained for using metal kite strings or firing in the air.

City police chief Aftab Ahmad Cheema had warned before the festival that police would take "stern action" against both offences.

You tell me... Is there anything wrong with laughing as hard as I did for something like this? I mean... metal kite strings? What were they thinking?

Stinky Chicken
This is really going to go down in history as one of the stupidest things ever.

Why were you browsing "The Australian"?
I wasn't, it was a link on another website ;)

From the makers of the screen door submarine, metal kite strings!

That one really gave me a good laugh. Anyone dumb enough to use that near power lines really deserves what they get.

here's a question. Where does the stray bullet come from? I swear, Pakistan is one of the weirdest places I've ever been born in :p

According to the BBC, they have this problem every year
The string is known to have injured, even killed, motorcyclists unlucky enough to catch it across their throats. Last year, nine people died and dozens were injured either by the strings or by stray bullets.

Don't forget they also produced the solar powered flashlight! :dopey:👍

Wow .. sheer stupidity is amazing to me sometimes. On the plus side, the people in question weren't Americans for a change,.

I thought "Wtf" when I started seeing "2 more teens were killed by a car" and then the stray bullet.

I said "Wtf!? ALl these deaths and injuries out of nowhere?"

This should get into Darwin's very easily.

Haha .. Darwin made up for missing his golden opportunity with that guy trying to hit that kid on the bike. I never even thought of it that way before..

from shooting to the air? when the bullets come back down, I guess... still, it's pretty stupid to get so many people killed while flying kites... stranger traditions go on in the world, I'm sure, but this one is in the top-stupid chart

I have never got the thrill of shooting guns randomly into the air. What comes up has to come down (in this case at least). And obviously, having bullets come down is not a very good thing at all.

Not that I want to speak badly of other cultures, but everytime they show Arabs (moslt Arabs) celebrating something, they fire their AKs to the air... is it a national passtime?

Falling bullets could kill people? No joke? Sounds pretty crazy.......

Now THAT deserves a ROTFL barrage. Anyone care to do the honors?
I did waaaaaay too much ROTFL'ing during my economics class when I first saw this. The prof was staring at me and I still couldn't stop myself :p

An average of 4 people a year (in America alone) die from bullets falling from the sky.

especially ak bullets, those are really creative ways to die from kiting. I'm surprised that none of kites strangled anyone

I can see it now. "Man strangled by kite! -- Tonight on the evening news."

I guess god owns an AK47.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause of death for a lot of people. Motorcycles in Pakistan are as common as cars because of how rediculously expensive fuel is. The kite strings kinda just get in the way of the road and the riders either get knocked off or their neck gets tangled in the string. At least that's what my friend said. She goes to Pakistan for a few months at a time every year.
