Hello, I know this ENTIRE site was started by GT racing enthusiasts, but what about the people who like to play in the DIRT!! (not talking to you rally people!) I know some one else out there owns vehicles meant to pound rocks, mud, snow and sand, as opposed to assphault. So here is OUR thread.

I own the '87 Chevy silverado described in my Sig. as well as a 1977 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40! Basically all original. the 4.2L inline 6, 4 speed, and mild shackle lift and 31" tires. but i've got a locker, and 2.5" lift springs waiting to be put on it.

So, if you like Off-Roading, post what you will!!!!
 
because rally is rally, it's not Off-Roading. and it uses CARS!

as your reference to my spelling, well, actaully i just didn't know, but know that you put it that way, i'll leave it that way.
 
'88 Jeep Cherokee: 6.5" Rusty's lift, 33" XTs, more mods but i dont want to list em(kinda lazy).

soon to come is a 6.5" Rusty's Long Arm upgrade, D44s front/rear, 37" Wrangler MT/Rs or XTs, 350 SB(maybe), 5.13 gears w/ ARBs. more and more ideas, not enough cash
 
I'm on my second Jeep Cherokee (first Grand Cherokee) and I used to go off-road more than I do now. Not so much just to drive, but to get to secluded places with a cooler and all my other stuff. In Arizona there's so many places to go.

Sadly I am looking into getting rid of it. With fuel at $2.15 a gallon I just can't justify it anymore.

I'd really like to get an even bigger SUV with a V8, but until gas prioces fall or I get a big raise I'll be looking into a more efficient car.

Maybe I could pick up a cheap old Wrangler to mess around in for kicks. I also want to get a couple ATV's when my son is old enough.
 
I love off roading, I hang with buddies who like to play in the mud. They have S-10's, ZR2 Blazers, Wrangler, and F-250's. We love to go play in the dirt!

I've even tried my luck with my Blazer but in never faired to well.

How is rally not off-roading? It meets all the criteria you described above. So what if it's cars? Many of the Paris-Dakar vehicles were trucks or motorcycles.
 
ok, i don't know to many cars, even rally cars that can go rock climbing, trudge through deep snow/mud. rally is rally, it's great, but this isn't a RAlly thread. ok.

as to your reference to Dakkar, well, what i have seen of it, there were no cars, but i know they compete. If i would have wanted rally to be the topic, the thread would be titled that way.
 
They have Corvette Stingrays that have huge lifts.

Also do you recall the monster garage were they made a mud bogger outta a 70's Vette?
 
Well technically he is right, rally racing is driving really fast down dirt roads, but they are still on roads, bad roads though.

Off roading he's talking about is mudding, rock crawling, and stuff like that.

Off-road is OFF-ROAD! Rally is on a road, just like BlazinExtreme said. His definition of off-road is Litterally, OFF-ROAD. (refering to 87chevy)

This isnt in a "drifting and other motorsports" thread. this is in a CARS IN GENERAL thread. man , some of you guys are WAY too picky!

its that simple... rally is off-road, technically, but not like mud-boggin, or rock crawling, or even driving down an unknown alligator trail in the middle of the forrest!
is that better, or do i need to spell it out for ya?
 
I admit that it is not like rock crawling, but that is more of a specialized sport with highly specialized vehicles than regular off-roading.
 
well, anyways, Ive got an 89 ford ranger with a 3in. body lift and sits on 30's. Its a 2x4 but its very capable, i assure you.
Also, im working on an 87 ford ranger ext. cab 4x4. Its getting an engine transplant, from a 2.9L V-6 to a ford small block 302 V-8. Its also getting a Dana 44 front and an 8.8 in the rear. looking at getting an NV3500 5speed trans also
 
did you not read BlazinExtreme's post 240z???? what do rally cars race on? ROADS!! designated roads that anyone in any thing could drive down 90% of the time!! and, Yes, COMPETITION rock crawling is a highly specialized sport. and so is pro-rally! however, you can go off roading in plenty of trucks, right of the showroom floor. JEEPS hello! not exactly specialized. how many cars are rally ready of the showroom floor? 2, maybe, in america. now, why don't you start your own RALLY thread and leave us OFF-ROADERS alone!

You don't get much tougher and versatile than a Land Rover. My father-in-law has one, V8 engine, and will drive over just about anything the British countryside has to offer.

Or, if you want even more serious off-roading, go to Iceland for the off-road races:

Actually I'll tend to disagree with you on the Land Rovers. Well the new ones at least, the old ones like you showed were true off roaders, now they've been reduced to nothing more then a glorfied, overpriced, SUV.

The Hummer I'd say is the same way when it comes to off road vechiles.

Jeep did it right though with the Wranglers and Chevy did it sorta right with the ZR2 line. So I guess there are still a few trucks left you can afford and off road with righrt from the showroom floor.

Although I'd never take a brand new vechile thrashing about down trails.
 
I have seen a lifted truck with dirt on it only one or two times. There are plenty of them around, and there are many offroad trails where I live. The only "real" offroaders I have seen drive Defenders or Jeeps. I have the feeling that many people lift their trucks just because they think it looks cool.

Wow. Okay.

I specifically said in my post that I was not talking about regular off-roading, just rock-crawling.

There are 4 vehicles that I can think of that are rally ready off the showroom floor and are sold in America. (Remember, it is a lot more popular in Europe.)

Subaru WRX STi
Mitsu Lancer Evo
Mitsu Lancer Evo MR (Coming here soon)
Subaru WRX

Admittedly, If you didn't want to completely trash them, you would have to do some prep work before you went rallying, but you would have to do the same to a truck before you went off-roading, right?

I wouldn't say anything could drive down this 90% of the time.
 
Well ya lots of people do it cause it looks cool, just as me lowering my truck, I think it looks sweet. Its just a sport truck thing, you make your truck however you like it.

Plus most of the time if you spend close to 50 grand on lifts and tires chances are your not going to drive it around and f up the truck. So your right its more of a show thing most of the time.

And on another note, most of the time lowered truck guys and lifted truck guys dislike one another....a lot.
 
hmmm. no i'd still say just about anything could drive down that. well, maybe ANY TRUCK 2x4 or 4x4 could drive down that and probably plenty of cars too. maybe you wouldn't want to do it a 80+ like that rally car is, but that road does not look that bad. and the cars you listed. only TWO cars, different packages on them, but still, only TWO basic car models. from only two brands.

thanks for posting those cool picks aljones. But i'll have to say that Toyota Land Cruisers are better. i think rovers came first, but 'Cruisers are cooler.

I'll be posting picks of my trucks asap. maybe tonight.

I went off-roading today during lunch time at the flood way (Giant ditch) It was in a late 1980's NIssan 4X4, just about flipped the poor thing, and got it stuck only once. Fun Stuff!!
