Holy s**t, thats incredible, its probably going to be the best M5 yet!

500HP, in GT4Prologue it says 493hp?

Maybe BMW adopted VVTI from Honda?

vvti is from toyota

and bmw has something similar to vvti called "vanos", or the more modern "double vanos"

honda's vtec is like an on/off switch. vanos is constant

and yeah, this will be the best m5 yet

looks like they are taking a few notes from their f1 programming with the higher revs and all

BMW introduced variable valve timing in MY1990, with the M50 six cylinder engine in the 525i ; incidently, the next year Honda made it available on the NSX.

Not widely known because VTEC sounds much catchier than VANOS, mainstream BMWs have been widely available with variable valve timing a few years before Hondas were. VTEC Preludes were not available until MY1993 and the GS-R Integra until MY1994. Honda just had better marketing ; after all, not many M3s drive around with a DOHC DOUBLE VANOS sticker on the side.

7750 RPM? Is BMW Honda?

Maybe more like Honda is the Japanese BMW. They are both engineering driven car companys that also make really good bikes as well. BMW has been doing the high-rev thing for about as long at any rate. The S14 in the E30 M3 rev'd to 7,000, which in 1985 was pretty high. The E36 M3 Evo (Euro) rev'd to 7,400. The E39 M5 motor revs to 6,800, very high for a 5.0 liter V8.

Thats quality Engineering from BMW.

BMW has produced some quality cars, there v8 sounds beautiful, but this NEW V10 in the E60 sounds the best, very Vibrant and strong.

:)

BMW has been doing the high-rev thing for about as long at any rate.

Yet, except the M3, there isn't a single BMW on the market that achieves peak power at over a pretty reasonable 6200 RPM (for reference the Ford Escape V6 peaks at 6000), and the one at 6200 is the new X5 4.8is. Maybe M has been doing the high-rev thing for some time, but BMW's "tame" products don't seem to see it.

It'll be $75600.

Is that correct, because it works out at around £41,388.36p
for the BMW M5, which seems cheaper than the old one? :irked: :D

What you need to realise is that British prices and US prices do not correlate under any circumstances. I'll give you a few examples:

- the Saab 9-3 2.0T Linear (the base model in America, the base 2-liter model in the UK) starts at $26400 (£14500). However, the same vehicle in the UK, equipped the same way starts at £19600 - $35800.
- the Mitsubishi Outlander LS starts at $18400 (£10100) in the US, but in the UK it starts at £17000 ($31000).
- the Kia Optima LX V6 starts at $17900 (£9800) in the US, but the Kia Magentis LX V6 (same car, different name) is £13000 ($23700) in the UK.

As you can see, the UK gets raped when it comes to new cars. But fortunately for you guys, the vehicles always depreciate much faster - so a lesson to all UK members: BUY NEARLY NEW!!!!!

Anyway, back to the M5. Even though this is a crap way of doing it, the US pays about 69.5% of what the UK pays when it comes to cars (based on those three vehicles as an average). Assuming that holds, which it probably doesn't, that $75600 translates into $98300 - or £53900. Good luck paying that.

There's actually a much easier way to calculate all this, and it's what I did. The old M5 was $69900; the old 540i manual was $53900. The new 540i manual is $58300, so, proportionally, the new M5 should be $75600. Really, it's an educated guess, but I don't see any reason why it shouldn't pan out.

M5Power
Yet, except the M3, there isn't a single BMW on the market that achieves peak power at over a pretty reasonable 6200 RPM (for reference the Ford Escape V6 peaks at 6000), and the one at 6200 is the new X5 4.8is. That's because your average consumer is not a fan of peaky engines. It is a design choice by BMW to make their mainstream products more useable in day to day driving. Early torque and modest power peaks make that happen. That's why Honda caved into popular griping and lowed the rev limit on the S2000 so that it had more usable power.

When the M50 was introduced, it was balanced, square design. When the cars started getting heavier and more low end grunt was needed, BMW decided to undersquare the engines by increasing the stroke. If you look at a recent M54 engine like in the 330i, you'll notice the stroke is somewhat more than the bore.

^^^^About that s2000....Honda only lowered redline and raised displacment in US, Honda exacly said "current s2000 is too much of a sport car for us", so they made it softer for americans......

thats a sick engine there, but with all those horses it still wont beat the new corvette c6 cause it will be heavy, im not really sure how heavy it will be, but corvette will be light as hell with all the fiberglass

If the C6 weighs around 3150 like the C5, then the new M5 will need to weigh in at 3900lbs in order to match the 400hp C6's power/weight ratio.

The old M5 weighed in at around 3970lbs.

The price for UK buyers, gonna be a great car.

At the same time, BMW announced that the new 500bhp V10-powered M5 will be priced around £62,500 when it goes on sale next April.

Somebody should cram that bad boy into an M3.

Any guesses what Dinan is going to do with it? Supercharged, I bet it'll put out in the vicinity of 750-800 hp.

I'd like to see CTS-V with a Linginfelter twin turbo LS1 go up against a Dinan M5 in a comparo. :)
