I just want to know what people think the differences are.

Obviously I know you can't flip a car online, don't mention that but there are obviously some other differences that have nothing to do with that. I want to hear what people think.

Really all I've noticed, is online tires seem to have a little less lateral grip, and the seem to wear down at a different rate. Offline the cars seem to stick to the road much better.

I actually prefer the online physics just because of the reduced grip. The tires in GT5 in general have too much grip for the cars they come with, and for what they're supposed to be (so many cars come with sports hard, but in real life don't actually have semi-slicks).

So although the inability to flip cars is obviously less realistic, I personally prefer the online physics anways.

No car In my league that is a production cars except very few (Viper ACR) comes with Sport tires. All come with comfort tires. I also never notice any difference online to offline except I push my tires harder online because the competition is live!

I notice the difference mainly when drifting. If I set up a car to drift offline, it is bad online. If I do the opposite, it's good both on and offline. Obviously, I prefer online.

Why haven't I already joined your league then? lol it sounds great to me.

Edit: I just went to your league thread and remembered why. I love the heavy damage, tire selection, and I also love the fact that you shut ABS off when a car doesn't have ABS. What turned me off was the traction control and ASM thing. It does make sense, and is realistic, it's just that I can't drive with those on. I actually kind of think that GT5 does a poor job simulating a real TCS system, even on 1 I think it does too much work for you.

Could I join and maybe just avoid races with cars that have TCS?

 I am a realistic maniac. I recently finished the tire guide check it out by clinking the link in my signature. ;)

You don't have to drive with them on ever It depends on your driving skill. The only reason I allow TCS and the other assist so others can join the league and events who don't have the skills to use no aids. If you use ABS1 then the ASM has to be on because ABS in my opinion is something like a stability control. There are cars like the R35 which has different driver modes would allow you to just use ABS 1. If you have a Supra RZ though which does not have ASM in reality you cannot use ABS 1, it has to be off all the time. Just as in a real car If it has TCS ASM and ABS you can use them if you want or not. There will be professional and Amateur events. Pro events all assist must be off while amateur events the new people who are not accustom to my hardcore play can join these events and have a great time. Give me a car which you would love to own in reality that is in GT5 and I will do a mock PGTR regulation for you.

Cool. I'm actually ok with other people using aids usually (except skid recovery, and in some cases TCS), I just don't like to use them.

I actually posted on your league thread. WE can continue there. I want to join, just hoping I'm available for when you guys race.

Neither are perfect.

Neither are perfect.

Never said they were. However, if you get to play almost every sim or semi sim available, you'll quickly find out, it could be a hell of a lot worse

Offline doesn't have any lag or real disadvantages - it's a more pleasant and less glitchy experience.

I used to like online better but if you think about it offline your PS3 is running the physics engine exactly as PD intended so therefore is more "real" according to them.

Pretty much a moot subject now. Last time im writing in a on vs off thread.

IMO, Online physics in most games are different. take call of duty for example. Theres a huge difference in online play and offline single player. This is something developers add to make the game more unpredictable, exciting, competitive etc etc..(lag also adds to the drama ofcourse)

GT is no different. The online physics, somewhat levels the playing field for experienced and inexperienced racers.

As for the ops question about WHAT the differences are...there are countless threads about this subject. use the search button.

I agree about call of duty. I've noticed that too. But in CoD it's not as crucial as it is in a sim. Luckily GT5 is still extremely playable.

Believe it or not, even iracing, the supposed "best sim ever", has the same problem. Well there is no offline, BUT, the difference between a solo test, and a race with other people is huge. Hell there's even a physics difference between the warmup for the race, and the race itself!!

The only sim I've played where I saw no difference online or offline is netKar PRO, which is no surprise. It's the most realistic sim by far, and it's an incredible piece of software. It has its drawbacks, but physics are not one of them.

Offline is far better. It's ridiculous how much the grip fluctuates online. Can't race very well in offline tunes.

For example: if a tune offline will help you with cars that understeer, it will make the car oversteer a lot worse.

Online physics is a lot more challenging for sure, I often host a practice room with no ABS, no car restriction and comfort medium, had some fun with GT500 cars and XJR9, they were hard to control, got some other driver joined in, they never stay more than few laps. I tried them offline with same setup, seems to be more forgiving but the cars felt more "alive" offline - they gave more feedback, react better, should I say more vivid if I compared to pictures. Online cars felt bland, almost like a simpler physics is used with different threshold value in grip parameters, but still fun for me.

I prefer Online physics, mainly because I happen to play online all the ****ing time.

Online = more oversteer & tire spin in general compared to offline, in my experience.

The best explanation for the differences between online and offline can be found here and here.

I notice the difference mainly when drifting. If I set up a car to drift offline, it is bad online. If I do the opposite, it's good both on and offline. Obviously, I prefer online.

Set up a car for drift? Ah you mean you use default suspension, change the stupid 0.20 toe angle to 0.12 or something and it's good to go for drift/race/drag/etc.

Or that's just me.
The rest is stock.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I've never really done any offline/online comparisons until recently for Parity League racing where we would find a car and PP level offline, then race online. The differences are pretty small but they are there and it seems to be focused mainly on how loose the back end is. If you have a slight push offline, it can come back to neutral online. If you oversteer slightly offline, it'll oversteer more online etc. Still it is pretty close.

I prefer online.
Offline feels like it has SRF after driving online.

You can't wheelie as easliy online...

well that's proves why i can't do rally offline and i can in online

Most people would obviously like what they're used to. 90% of my racing is online so when I do any offline TT or whatever, it seems very arcadey. But since offline has no connection variables it would seem that would be the purists favorite.

I switch between both regularly. The question is if it's used as an excuse. Be like water, my friend.

I'm more used to offline, but like I said before, I like online better because I believe the tires in GT5 have too much grip for what they're supposed to be, so anything that takes away some of that extra grip is a good thing in my opinion.

Plus, it really should be more of a struggle to keep a car inline than it is offline. At the same time though, it does seem pretty unpredictable sometimes but I think that's more the way the tires wear so rapidly. I think they should get the tire wear at a more realistic level but for now I'm ok with it. I think a race where everyone has to pit is a good race. It's more fun when that's involved. it gives more people a chance to improve position

I notice some moments of lack of grip online, however as I constantly switch cars it's hard to determine whether it's really the game or just me taking too much risk.

It's the game, always best to tune cars that you use online in your lobby, setting them up offline will result with very different handling in an online race.

Hello, I use a steering wheel and on-line racing if vastly different, almost like I have no grip, compared to off-line.
My all time off-line favorite track is Nurburg and it`s treacherous on-line.
