Oh, how I miss my Oprah. Halle Berry does the job more efficiently. But Oprah was my darling angel.

Let's just hope next-gen consoles aren't like this.

It was more to do with I prefer the look of the fat ones to the new slims

I like how the coating was easily smudge-able. Felt like a more precious system. Obviously, the reflectivity of the coating was awesome, then they went with the PS2 feel. It's no big deal, though.

Im just glad my brother gave me a way of not missing my gt5

I find it interesting that failures of the fat ps3 systems isnt timed the same. I have heard of them failing from 2 months of age all the way up to 5 years

I will miss my old faithful 40gb but gt5 needs my attention as well as more hard drive space at least I wont be shuffling game data from other games just to keep gt5 on there

Actually i trust the fat PS3s more than the slim PS3s... Everyone i know that has a fat PS3 i have one too btw, the only thing we do is put the PS3 into safe mode and manually running restore file system... (known how to make it do it for about 3 years now and doing so keeps the PS3 running smooth it is sort of like would a virus scan would do to your pc) but besides that they have had me put new hard drives in them usually i put 500GB-1TB hard drives in them and they still have the fat ones same as me... mine is still running great... Last Christmas i was.running low on hard drive space so i upgraded it too.. I take good care of it, every other month i take it apart and give it a good dusting. I don't want a slim.. The next upgrade i am doing to it is making it into a original 80GB style PS3.. Mine is the last version of the fat models... It doesn't have full backwards compatibility, it is limited to play ps one games and PS3 games. I am getting to money to get the parts off of a original 40GB-80GB backwards compatible PS3s and put the parts on my PS3. (basically the top half of the PS3)..including the chip underneath the blueray player (chip that lets the blueray player read ps2 games).. But anyway i personally like the fat ones more because they are easier to fix and they look better too.

I do agree with you there I took very good care of my machine

I dont understand why it had a short life cycle I bought a ps2 at launch and traded it in with 50 games when the 40 gb ps3 came out cant remember how long I had it

back then consoles were made to last

Yep.. I have had mine since Christmas of 2008 and it is still running like new... But you never know it could die in 2 seconds-100 years. Hopefully a very long time from now.

Now that I think of it mine started to get loud a week ago.with the fans hmmmm

Yeah if that is the case it was probably your heat sink.. That and the blueray player dying are usually what kills the PS3s. Besides that they are amazingly durable.

Reading all of these horror stories of PS3s dying makes me really happy that I was able to get the extended warranty for half-price after the PSN outage.

Has anyone heard of any problems with the slims?

Well the only one i have seen that has problems are the 120GB SLIM PS3s.. i have had to replace the hard drives in them because they seem to start drastically slowing when they reach 20GBs or below.. Besides that they are usually good... I just don't like the plane look of them you know...

I guess you may have figured out by now, i work on computers and PS3s... It's fun and i make good money for the repair jobs... Plus i like helping people as best i can.

Kind of got that impression yes. but I guess if my new one lasts 4 years like the last one ill be set for the ps4

Yeah most likely you will... i plan on keeping my 160GB fat PS3 (guess i should call it my 500GB PS3 now) as long as it will run..

No problem.. If you have any questions when you get the new PS3 add me on psn GTDS-ZACHERY.. Be more than happy to help you

oxymoron of 2012.

so basically the plastic casing is amazingly durable. tons of issues with the FAT, mine died, so did many others just search the web, there are countless cases

i agree with OP i prefered the look of my FAT to my Slim. in fact my FAT was quieter than the Slim, which seems in direct contradiction to 99% of other people's experience

How so?

Yep my 40gb kicked the bucket last year too. Had to live with the wii for a while :( I got GT5 and a 120gb slim... Good thing too cause the amount of hours I've put into GT would have killed another 40gb easy! :ouch:

Sounds like alot of ps3s decided to kick the bucket in the last year

Yep just type ylod (yellow light of death) in youtube and there's tons of videos of dead 60 and 40 gig and how to fix them. In my opinion it's not worthing fixing them for what it costs and most of them only last another 6 months to a year unless you get the processors reballed.

I went back to GT3 while my PS3 was in the shop, and when he couldn't fix it I just bought a new one.:ouch:

I have an old fatty 40Gb PS3 (upgraded to 1TB though) and just take care of it as much as I can. I clean the dust from the exhaust vent on a weekly basis and never leave it on for more than 18 hours in one session :) It is still going strong and the 4 USB ports on the front is awesome-ness!

I also re-flowed a 40Gb I bought off ebay and it is also going well some 6 months later :)

well ill see how my brothers 320gb machine goes ill be picking it up soon made me a offer i couldnt refuse

Btw did you have a backup of your GT5 save data?

It's funny. 2 people have asked that but thelvynau still ignores the question.

Well yeah thats an annoyance to get everything downloaded again but fortunately I do have my xbox 360 to at least give me game time a shame really I have 40 games on my ps3 collecting dust at the moment and a fair few of them I was in the middle of thank god ps3s arent 900 bucks anymore
Not so worried about keeping the data ill chase that avenue once I get my new ps3 just need to know if I can activate my master account on my new ps3 when I get it

Why is it that when people post without using sentences like in the post quoted above, I want them to lose their game data? How hard is it to put a "." at the end of a sentence and start the new sentence with a capital letter? Really.. how hard is it? LOL

Anyway, thelvynau, just wondering, did you back up save game data? It's weird that you ignored that question twice.

thelvynau
So would that mean I can still use my master account on the new ps3?

a bit sad though my 40 gb is 4 years old a good innings from what I have read about the 40 gb model

Unless your HDD failed you should be able to transfer your old HDD to your new PS3 and then just use your old login info on your new ps3. As long as you have The GT5 save info on your PS3 you can access it and go on your way like nothing happened.

You sure about that? I don't think you can just take a HD out of one PS3 and slap it in another and have it work without data loss. I think it will recognise it's a different drive and the games won't work without being reinstalled, or the HD won't work at all and will have to be formatted.

I did a complete HD backup when switching out old PS3 with bad BD player for a new PS3 and I still had to reinstall games even though all the data was still there.

My apologies for not answering the question yes I backed up my data.

As for leaving out the full stop I apologise. All I see from your last statement is you starting something thats not relevant im not looking to have a argument with you nor did I ask for it.

Edit: also I had asked people to contribute to this thread where all you seem to be doing is jumping in and picking at things, im trying to work out why? Me not answering a question was a oversight on my part nothing else either contribute or simply dont post.

Oh okay, I thought Sony had issued an update back when people were losing data when their PS3's broke so that you could switch HDD's out. I'd check to be sure though because I for some reason remember Sony addressing this issue.
