SKOT_FREEOh okay, I thought Sony had issued an update back when people were losing data when their PS3's broke so that you could switch HDD's out. I'd check to be sure though because I for some reason remember Sony addressing this issue.
No it doesn't let you... As soon as you put in a hard drive from another PS3 or a new hard drive, the system will automatically format the hard drive... Then you have to put in a usb flash drive with the latest PS3 UPDATE SOFTWARE on it and it will then begin to install it... Trust me i know...
Also just want to give a little info on some back-up tools... I have found some software for a "fat32 formatter" for external hard drives (Microsoft windows after i believe 2000 will no long let you format hard drives over 32GB to fat32) i have software that can do it... So if you get say a 500GB+ external hard drive want to be recognized on the PS3 (show up like a usb flash drive would)... Let me know i will send you a link to download it.
