OK can someone tell me how GT5 is better than NFS Shift or Grid?

I have played GT from Gran Turismo. I got GT4 the day it came out and I STILL play it. I only brought the PS3 is for GT5. Don't give a care for the blue ray...GT5 is only reason I got a PS3. While waiting and waiting on GT5 I brought Grid and I tole myself this game is OK but it will be nowhere as great GT5 even though you get cockpit view for every car and damage. As I was still waiting I got NFS Shift, great game cockpit view for every car, damage and pretty good AI but there was noway it could compare to GT5. GT5 finally arrives and I'm like 10 again and it's Christmas. Then I play it after hours of updates and well both games compare pretty good IMO. To me GT5 isn't as good as GT4. Am I missing something? I know some will say something about the amount of cars, but who the hell needs 100 different skylines and 50 miatas. I want to love GT5 with all my heart but I just can't.
 
As you said GT5 is not better than GT4, Grid has awesome damages every circuits have tire barriers
NFS Shift is too arcadey
 
How GT5 is better than Shift or Grid?

The list is far to long to type out here for sure.

Each player has there own desires from a game and I am a big fan of race games but frankly I thought both Grid and Shift were lousy. I quit after just a short while on both games due to the total lack of realism in game play.

Grid was the worst I have played in years and Shift was a close second.

In Grid the cars seemed to one minute hold corners at impossible speed and at the next slide all over the road at a sensible speed. The AI must use rubber banding as even when I crashed repeatedly I still was able to catch and pass the field in just a short race. They should have been way to far ahead to catch. Overall my impression of the game was "I'm glad I tried it before I bought it"

Shift the cars feel so strange on the track handling is horrible imo rewards for driving dirty is very lame and the sound of the cars I tried was awful. Graphics were good and that is about the only good thing I can say about it.
 
If you've played both and aren't sure which is better, nobody here is going to be able to make any point that will convince you either way.
 
All I can say is, GT5 feels better. Grid and Shift I always found too arcadey, if they handled like GT5 they would be better I think, Grid for the awesome crashes you could set up.

GT5 just has the handling so right, and that is the most important part of a racing game. This is the area Grid n Shift fall short in.
 
It personally makes me laugh when people compare a game like GT5 to any other its a totally different concept...

It's about like compareing cheese with brick and saying which is harder.

Absolutely. In a racer handling is everything and GT5 has it. Also the fact that there are over 1000 cars to choose from on some great tracks and even night daya transistions don't hurt either. As for damage I could care less really. I like to race not crash.
 
GRID, truely one of the worst games I have ever played, real car models that drive like something out of Wipeout.

Still, it had good damage.......................

No offence, but you are missing two things:

1) The search facility in the top right hand corner of this forum

2) The (I've lost count) many many exisiting threads that have covered what is wrong with GT5, GT5 compared to other racing games and ''what I don't like about gt5''.
 
I have Shift and GT5. GT5 did not live up to the hype, there are innumerable posts by disgruntled GT4 players (so there's no fanboy bias), and most seem to feel at least a LITTLE shortchanged.

GT5's driving physics and graphics are very nice, but Shift was just so much FUN..! If you having fun automatically makes it an 'arcade' game, then so be it. GT5 could do with a healthy dose of arcade if that is the case!

I really hate to say it, but all Shift needed was GT5's accuracy of driving physics, better wheel FFB implementation (on my DFGT, driving a straight line was a terrible exercise in dampening unrealistically exaggerated wobble), and some increase in size of the Garage, and an online system that allowed bashers and lurkers to be booted, and GT5 would have gone back to the store.

Some of this is promised in Shift 2 Unleashed. If delivered, GT5 is going to have a run for it's money. I NEVER had any need to grind in Shift, upward progress was logical (if a little easy), online was a piece of cake to find fairly matched races, but the bashing was intolerable.

I THOUGHT GT5 was going to be the answer to all my prayers. At the moment, it isn't. Perhaps Kaz has great plans, perhaps he's just counting his money and working on GT6. Who knows? But I honestly, from all the hype, did NOT expect to find myself looking back on Shift with anything but scorn, and I did NOT expect myself looking forward to Shift 2 in any way...

God help me.... I do!
 
GRID had dreadful handling, whether your play it with a gamepad or wheel and pedals (in fact it might have been the first racing game where I actually felt the experience got worse when I used my G25 instead of the DS3).
It still managed to have some pretty exhilarating racing though, so despite hating the handling I actually did play it for a fair few hours.

NFS Shift I actually quite liked - to a certain extent. It was buggy as hell and in terms of handling it was hit and miss, some cars where absolutely horrendous (eg. the BMW M3 e92, and most cars in general once you started heavily upgrading them) while others (the Zondas and the McLaren F1 for instance) were such a joy to drive - with wheel and pedals - that it almost made me forget all the flaws of the game.

I'm really looking forward to Shift 2 and keeping my fingers crossed it will be a more even experience this time, and fit for more or less the same "semi-sim" label I also use for the likes of GT5 and Forza (with the "proper" sims still only to be found on PC).
 
If you don't see the difference between GT5 and Grid it means you're playing it in a different way. Just yesterday I've seen a video on youtube of a guy driving his murcielago and throwing it into corners like a maniac and drifting his way out, but it's not a sports drifting style, it's high speed throwing into corners and right away I remembered Grid. It seems he was liking it, it is a manner that he uses to play, he also drove from 3rd perspective. This is not how I play it, I play it with a wheel and in a chair, using bumper cam and I never go maniac on the corners. I'm also sure that such gameplay will never get you gold in the seasonal events, that way is just wrong for a simulation game like GT5- GRID style. :D
 
People should stop comparing simulators to arcade racers. They strive to entertain in different ways and with different methods. Gran Turismo has nothing in common with games like Grid or Shift besides the fact that it is about racing.

And arcade doesn't mean bad racing per default. Simulation fans should stop complaining about games like Grid or Shift just because they don't aim to be simulators. I enjoy them both and I'm perfectly satisfied with how they play out. I would rather have Codemasters develop arcade racers and Polyphony develop simulators, because they are both very good at what they are doing.

And about your feelings towards Gran Turismo 5; just play some more and the game will grow on you. It might not be as massive as GT4 but it's still a very good racer with one of the greatest driving feels every created.
 
Shift felt like it didn't know if it wanted to be a sim or arcade racer and ended up doing neither very well. (at least the PC mods helped) Grid leans toward arcade all the way while GT5 is toward a sim.
If you like driving then Gt5, if you like crashing then Grid, if you don't know what you like then Shift.
 
As you have said, the PC sims have the physics refined to a far greater degree. In fact, if this IS the only reason to play a racing game, why play GT5, either? If driving accuracy were the ONLY thing worth getting a game for, then GT5 would be floundering on the shelf just as much as Shift.

But the problem is, IT ISN'T. Once you put yourself in a car, there is still either the AI (GT5's is still pretty dumb), there are the events themselves, there is the degree of customization (GT5 trails Shift in many important aspects - tire pressure, individual gear ratios, and several other things although it DOES have things Shift misses), and the ability to dress your car up for the track, express your individuality (or lack thereof!), and there is the whole experience of driving (Shift's sound is far superior to GT5 on most cars, it's visual and tactile integration gives a far better sense of speed) and crashing (obviously, still in development in GT5).

Then there is the window dressing. I often find myself thinking 'CLINICAL' when I play GT5. Where are the flag girls? Where is the checkered flag at the end of the race (mind you, Shift dropped the ball on the latter), why is there not ONE girl in the race track spectators? Why do crashes sound like I hit a bass drum?

Then there is the question of logical progression through the game, an epic fail from GT5.

When all is said and done, it is STILL a game. Games should be FUN. Whether the driving physics are accurate or NOT. You've got to work REALLY hard to create fun in GT5. You can't HELP but have fun, for all the arcade-y handling, in Shift.
 
The need for speed series after hp2 on ps2 are the most boring game's ever. And grid was a joke.
Gt5 is the best driving game out today and will only be beaten by gt6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
I'd leave GRID far behind because the physics were terrible. You could actually drift your way around corners without having to brake.

Now that just leaves 2 games. Even though Shift has one of the best cockpit views in any racing game, GT5 has about 200 cars with cockpit view, while Shift has only 60. Shift isn't quite as realistic and it has too much bloom.

If you're not having fun in GT5, then quite frankly, you don't actually enjoy driving itself. The fun in GT5 comes from the realistic driving not from fake arcadey over the top gameplay. All that stuff you mentioned, flag girls, checkered flags, crash sounds, are nice but they don't add anything to the actual gameplay itself. NFS Shift and Grid have these things but that doesn't make the driving fun or realistic. Grid's driving is not even slightly realistic and Shift's cars slide all over the place. I would never trade GT5's realistic and rewarding driving for Shift/Grid's unrealistic, over the top and arcadey driving. I don't think GT5 is the game for you if you don't enjoy the driving... GT5 is about the driving... Shift and Grid are just all flash and no trousers. I don't even know why we're comparing these games, they share nothing in common, other than the fact that they both have cars.

The reason is that while appearing very similar, they are very different entities... where Shift and Grid lack realistic physics challenge, they excel in gameplay fun.

Some of the physics were actually better in Shift - like when you'd run over a curb, the car reacted in a much more realistic fashion. And the force feedback through the wheel was 10 times better than GT5. Racing against the AI cars was a ton of fun in Shift - it was the whole point of the game, and it did it well. Unlike GT5 where it's a completely frustrating experience. And with Shift, you weren't sitting around posting on GT Planet while some 7 hour b-spec race was going on and on and on - you were sitting in front of your steering wheel doing some racing. And making enough money to buy the cars you wanted in a reasonable amount of time - not grinding for ages and ages.

Shift 2 is going to have improved physics, better graphics, and twice as many cars and tracks. Ive already got it pre-ordered and I'm very psyched about it.

Grid was a fun game, but very much an arcade racer. Just drift through every corner. Fun, yes, but it didn't have a lot of longevity to it. The replays in that game were astounding though. The livery editor was excellent as well.

Shift physics are not in any way close to GT5 and the force feedback on Shift made the game unplayable with my DFGT. It makes it impossible to hold a straight line. I respect that you have an opinion, but Shift's physics are quite poor and not anywhere near GT5.

I constantly see this brought up and it confuses me... I played with both a G27 and DFP and with both I definitely had to hold the wheel straight when I wanted to go straight, but I rarely had a problem keeping it straight.
 
GT is a simulator (as it says on the case cover: "The Real Driving Simulator"). The other two are arcade-style games.

So, according to you, because PD say its a sim, it is?
How? Where are the burst tyres? Where are the cracked windscreens? Where is the dirt? As for the crashes, pfff! As for the so called AI, puleese! Why doesnt my G25 rumble when I hit rumble strips? Why when I hit the grass in corner, does every single car, regardless of what aids I do or dont use, end up facing the wrong way? Why is the clutch not progressive? And why dont any of the cars stall if I dont give them enough gas when starting from a standstill?

Simulation. Yeah right.

You find me one single independent test anywhere on the face of the planet that actually says for dead certainty that GT5 is a sim and I'll happily eat my shorts.
 
If you want a simulator, then there is nothing like GT5, but if you just want to smass cars and play the bad guy/cop, then go for NFS. :)

On consoles perhaps, but a long list of PC racing sims say hello :).

As for the continued debate on Shift physics, unlike GRID - which was most certainly a pure bread arcade racer in my opinion, only one step away from the racing games that cut all ties to the real world cars by also eliminating the option for manual gear changes and making the brake pedal 100% redundant - I'm definitely among those that felt that Shift made a somewhat decent, if often flawed attempt at mixing arcade racer and sim (and compared to many PC sims I also consider GT5 a "semi-sim").

With my G25 quite a few cars in Shift felt great, with handling I would argue was on par with GT5 (lacking a bit in certain areas, slightly better in others perhaps).
However, there were also numerous cars in Shift that for whatever reason was terrible to drive, even though they really shouldn't have been.

If I recall correctly NFS Shift was actually running on a modified version of the ISI engine, which, through many versions, has been powering numerous PC racing sims over the last decade or so - including GTR2, GTL and rFactor.
But obviously just sharing a game engine or components of a game engine isn't a guarantee for perfect results. I believe there has also been countless rFactor mods with less than stellar physics.
