Car In Mind:
1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe
The Specs of the one I'm looking at:
Needs paint, badly.
Dent in front left fender
120,000 Miles.
Automatic
1 Owner since new, and he's a mechanic (and my boss)
$300

Why I want the car:
$300
Turbo
Not a bad first car
Why Not?
Automatic
Needs Paint
That Dent
It's not the orig. planned Supra MkIII
If I wait till June, I get Supra MkIII

I've looked around some sites for other prices on the car, and I found a reg. Tbird from same year with 150,000 miles thats discription just said "Runs" for $1,000 OBO
So I'm gonna have to say $300 is a damn good deal.

Anyway, Your thoughts/opinions of such a car, and anyone who has ever driven one, lemme know how it runs.

Heres a pic of one MINT. One I WISH was the one I'm getting.

I have driven later t-birds...but never the fox-bodied ones.

Let me just say that these engines can take a beating, and also put out very good horspower (and torque too, surprising for such a small displacement). For $300 I would take it too.

Ask about the head gasket. As with any forced induction car, these go quite quickly.

I would say go for it! (and up the boost;) )

Tercel. They're slower than hell, they're uglier than Josh, but they can take a beating like no other car out there, heck I'm sure they'd survive a nuclear explosion. As a first car that you're sure to trash around, I can't think of anything better.

Why would he get a Tercel if he can get the T-bird for $300? A Tercel is gonna cost at least that much, and it is FWD with no hop-up possiblities whatsover.

And Fox-bodies take quite a beating too...and to can do all the Mustang chassis/handling mods, too.

Did you "hop-up" your first car? A front wheel drive car, for a beginner driver, surely makes more sense to me in the New Jersey winter than a turbocharged RWD one... That little turbo's bound to create problems, too, which will lead to expensive repairs. Anything with the word "Turbo" in it won't be taken lightly by insurance, either.

Oh well, John. You decide, it's your money. 👍

There is a lot of parts for those cars. The inline 4 turbos can handle the horsepower I think about 500 hp in stock form. I also know that a lot of sport compact fwd drag racers use those engines in their cars.

my dad has a '93 T-bird and im going to give him a treat he's always saying how much nicer the '95 are so im going to fit a '95 front end on it and make it look like a '95 for his birthday coming up. But any way the older (late '80's) are very nice and by next sunday ill post the thing to look for in a turbo, to tell if it was properly tooken care of, because we all know how expensive they are to fix.i say go for it once you check out that turbo.

A turbo T-Bird for $300 USD is an outstanding deal, go for it! It will be a good first car, although it might be a bit on the big and heavy side of the automotive spectrum. It will be good enough until you get your Supra in June.

And as for the Tercel, it is probably the last car on the planet I would drive. It's a reliable car that will get you from point a to point b. That is it's only good quality. For the same price, you could easily get many other cars that are much more exciting to drive than the Tercel.
