So my family is buying 2 new tv's one for the outside breezeway, and one for the living room. Today, we bought a new one for the breezeway. It came in 720p ratio Y type screen ratio, and i was wondering how big of a diffrence it is between 720 and 1080p... The Living room TV were getting will be eather 1080i or p... undecided yet... But just wondering how big of a diffrence there is?

Ok, so i hooked it up to the 720p TV, which is this one:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9107635

But when I go to Settings/Displaysettings/etc To set my PS3 to 720p, I get a black screen as though the TV does not support it? What Am I doing wrong?

Well it would help if you included some pics or a model number of the tv you bought. But, I own a 720p tv for my bedroom, and we also have a 1080p one for the tv room downstairs, and honestly, there isnt much of a difference between the two, but that is due to the fact that not many games display in 1080p. If we watched a lot of blu ray movies, there would be more of a reason to own a 1080p tv, because many blu ray movies are 1080p. Another thing that you should understand is that almost all tv's that are 720p nowadays are also 1080i. There isnt much of a difference between 720p and 1080i, just know that 1080i is not the same thing or even close to 1080p.

Given the price of 1080p's now, there is no reason to skip out on it. I currently have a 720p/1080i TV that will be going into my bedroom once the 1080p is purchased. There is no way I'd even consider getting another 1080i.

Based on the fact that you have a PSN, you have a PS3 capable of outputting 1080p. Why not use all of it?

TB is right, we bought a 42inch sharp 1080p tv for only 1300 dollars. Really, theres not much of a reason not to just get the whole experience.

Except hundreds of dollars for only about 300 more pixels. I got a very nice 23" Samsung 720p/1080i for $500.

Or about double the amount pixels for the whole screen. For smaller screens 1080p won't be that much better than 720p.

Yea well youre not exactly going for a home cinema either with a 23 inch. Whereas hes looking to get one for the living room, and the larger the screen is, the more 1080p helps.

Exactly. 720 looks fantastic on a 23", but the same signal on a 42" looks, well, average by today's standards.
Don't go for 1080i because the analog cutoff is next year.
1080i will still work after Feb '08.

Again, I highly recommend spending the extra now and getting the p. It's better to spend it up front than want to upgrade in a year.

Edit: Why is this in the PS3 section? I hereby suggest a move to the E&HT forum. :P

Because its related to the use of a PS3 on a TV.

i had a 32" 1080i in my living room before, that went to the bedroom for a 42" 1080p and it looks better, it's like more realistic 3d in some weird way. Doesn't seem as "flat" as a 1080i

Im not sure why its doing that to be honest. Are you hooking it up with HD compatible cables? Either HDMI or Component. NOTE, the cables that come with the PS3 are COMPOSITE and do NOT support HD.

Better details will get better answers faster.

Oh 1080p is not 300 more pixels more than 720 :) Vertically thats 1920 vs 1280

720p is not even a mega pixel at 0.9MP
1080p is 2MP The difference is less noticeable on smaller screens as someone pointed out. But the difference is there.

I have a 32in($200 out of my pocket) and It's perfect for my setup as a PC monitor and HDTV for football and games.

Yeah, technically its 1080 vertical lines on 1080p versus 768 on a 720p set, but 1920 horizontal lines verses 1280 on a 720p set, quite a difference.
