Look at the videos

The style used to draw the graphics is very.... well.... different, but the gameplay looks really nice in those videos.

Definitely keep an eye on this game!

The cell-shading style reminds me of Viewtiful Joe. Can you tell us more about it?

It's from the same developer.

We've been looking forward to getting our hands on Okami pretty much since we first laid eyes on it, so we eagerly took the time to play through the two sequences of the game that are on display on the E3 show floor. In the game, you play as the reawakened Amaterasu, a god that's been reborn as a wolf and whose mission is to restore Japan to glory. The game is clearly inspired by traditional Japanese watercolor painting and calligraphy, so it literally looks like a painting in motion (check out all our direct-feed videos and see for yourself). It also seems to boast some solid play mechanics, though just experiencing the richly imagined world of the game was impressive enough for us.

Okami is apparently only 30 percent complete (it won't be out until next year), but already it looks fantastic and runs quite smoothly. Amaterasu, a white wolf with a spinning, fiery ring floating on her back, can run swiftly, jump quite high, and execute claw and tackle attacks. She can also communicate with the various characters she'll come across, though she'll also gain a variety of much more distinctive abilities as the game progresses. For example, there's the celestial brush: pressing and holding R1 causes the game to pause and turn into a sort of brownscale version, as if the onscreen image were just committed to parchment. Then you can control a calligraphy brush to paint ink onto the screen--symbolizing Amaterasu's focused powers. In the parts of the game we played, this technique was used to complete constellations missing stars, create a bridge over a magical river, smash open a gate, and finish off opponents with what's called a power slash. This is probably the most distinctive play mechanic we experienced.

Combat involved using the calligraphy brush to finish opponents who've been weakened. The fighting itself was pretty solid, and it featured a camera that gave us a good angle on all our foes, as well as tight, responsive controls. It was easy, though, as we could easily jump up and tear into the few weird but wimpy enemies we encountered.

Just running around in Okami is fun. One of the many neat effects in the game is how the world seems to come to life just from coming into contact with Amaterasu. Flowers and greenery bursts forth from her every footstep, and lily pads spring up in the water when she swims.

Okami seems to have a lot of character interaction and dialogue in it, as the demo involved a great deal of one-sided conversations between Amaterasu and her little spirit advisor, Issun. Amaterasu doesn't seem to actually speak, so Issun speaks to and for her instead. The dialogue is all in-text, and already the English localization seems solid. For a game that has sort of a formal air about it, you may be surprised to learn that Okami actually has a quirky sense of humor.

It's difficult for any game to stand out amid the bustle of E3, but we think Okami most certainly does. A lot remains to be seen about how the gameplay itself will pan out, but it was still a pleasure to finally get to see this game up close and get our hands on it. We're looking forward to bringing you more information on Okami, which is scheduled to ship sometime next year.

I didn't feel like creating a new thread about it, but I just got this game on the weekend and I've played it for a couple of hours so far.

It's somewhat original because of the drawing thing you do to interact with the game, but besides that it's like an action-rpg game. A very easy one by the way. That small bug helps you too much with tips all the time, I don't like that.

The characters speak an fantasy language which is quite annoying actually. My girlfriend really hated it, I'll have to play this when she's not around from now on.

The graphics of this game are really nice, cell-shading style that's been used in some games, but very well done. And the way you can interact with the scenery is nice, making it more alive and beautiful. So if you don't like the game at least it's nice to look at. :p

Anyone else playing it?

It's like Zelda the way you move around apparently. I'm starting this after I finish Tokyo Drift.

I'd like to revive this thread and make it an Okami discussion deal.

Okami has about the longest introduction of ANY game! That's been my only real complaint. But this game is just beautiful to look at. It gets better when you save a piece of land from evil curses. I cried a little bit when I revived a tree later in the game. The next thing I noticed was BEAUTIFUL! Dirty water was clean again, flowers blossomed, grass became green again... I cried lightly because it was so beautiful. It is a wonderfully-designed game. Sometimes, the game gets frustrating. I am completely awed at all the beautiful effects this game provides. I loved this game ever since I've seen concept pictures and TV coverage on it.

Capcom recently let go of Clover Studio. Damn shame. My favorite all-time Capcom game series are MegaMan and Final Fight in that order. If "Okami" ends up as a one-hit wonder and not have any sequel planned, this has to be up there as one of my all-time favorite Capcom titles. I can joyfully play this game and be adored by the Japanese art style this game has. In addition to being beautiful through and through, it is also pretty humorous. The way you use your Celestial Brush is absolutely amazing. I can appreciate all of this because art has always been my first love. This game combines my art interests with a wonderful Japanese realm. You actually play as a figure that literally saves the world. Imagine turning a dark and desolate place into a blooming and beautiful place to be. You've done it in many other games, but was it as amazing and as beautiful as Okami? Chances are, it's not. Out of 10, this is a game I seriously enjoy and will try to keep playing until it's beaten. I give it 9.75/10.00 (the -0.25 for the long introduction and sometimes frustrating play). Get this game if you don't have it already.

Sorry to bump the thread, but seeing as this is the only Okami-related thread...

About halfway through, in North Ryoshima Coast, there's this fish-restaurant. Chef Umi asks for Marlin. I got the Marlin alright, but now what? He's doing that cutscene with the slashing, but what am I supposed to do with the celestial brush? I tried the three stripes, I tried that whirlwind symbol there... Any help?

i dont like this game, its nice to look at, with a good soundtrack, but thats about it. no cool fighting or puzzle solving action such as zelda, and i dont enjoy playing as a wolf to be honest. i sold it after a month of owning it after its release.

I was slightly dissapointed after i bought it. I was expecting something great from the review that morgan and adam gave the thing. It is a very nice game to look at, but the game gets a little boring for the fact that you are always doing the same thing over and over pretty much.

I did play 15 hours already so I think its not boring. Its a nice world you play in and I still wonder what brush technique comes next.

The many conversation irritate me, but thats about it for now.

So, where are you now? What's the latest brush you found?

I'm guessing I'm close to the finish - just one more brush to go, and I found almost all of the stray beads - less then 15 to go! Some were damn tricky to find... I know where most of the ones I still don't have are - getting them involves fights I just can't manage yet.

Uhm from what Ive read I am just at ~33%.

But I did some walks around the fields and got stuck once that cost me about 1 hour.

*SPOILER* The latest brush I have is the water or what it is called brush.

Its really an original game just like ICO. And its a shame that not more of these games are made.

Capcom did close Clover Studio...:ouch: http://www.cloverstudio.co.jp/
http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/top/breaking-clover-studio-is-dead-207026.php

So we will probably never see a sequel..but the talent from Clover Studio formed a new Studio called Seedshttp://www.seeds-inc.jp

So you're around Sasa Sanctuary/Taka Pass, right? On the search for the Canine Warriors, right?

That part was a pain. Seriously, the only part I partially disliked. Going to find & feed the first 5 was ok, but the one with the Digging-record game was a real pain. First, it took me about an hour to complete the game with that mom wacking me over. Then, I had to fight the dog...
Though, I really liked the Sasa Sanctuary one, with the Carnivore Couple...

Oh well. The next part's a blast, though!

Ōkami HD For PS3 Puts The Celestial Paintbrush Back Into Players’ Hands With PlayStation Move Support This Fall

Capcom today announced that award winning Ōkami will be re-born this fall for North America and this autumn for Europe as a digital download on PlayStation Network for $19.99/€19.99. Already one of the most beautiful games ever created, the addition of HD graphics will make this new version of Ōkami even more stunning. Ōkami HD will also feature PlayStation Move integration as well as a full suite of PlayStation 3 system trophies.

Initially released to critical acclaim on the PlayStation 2 system, players take on the role of Amaterasu, the Japanese sun goddess, who inhabits the form of a wolf. After a tyrannical monster turns the world into a ruined wasteland, she must use her magical abilities to restore the land to its previous glory full of life and color.

Ōkami HD brings Amaterasu’s epic tale to the PS3 with fully integrated HD graphics and 16:9 aspect ratio. The trademark sumi-e ink art style lends itself perfectly to HD allowing players to experience more of the awe-inspiring world displayed in greater detail than ever before.

To create an even more immersive experience, players can take advantage of the PlayStation Move motion controller and naturally make brush strokes with the essential Celestial Brush to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. Ōkami HD will also support the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for those who wish to re-live the original experience.

Here's the official launch trailer:

This might be worth getting the move controller. In fact, they should eventually have a Move Bundle that includes Okami HD. Because the only thing bad I remember about Okami was doing the brush strokes with the controller could get frustrating, but a motion controller should eliminate that. :P

Excellent. I'll be buying this. Lost my ps2 copy while moving. Just wish I could buy it on disc. I don't care much for downloads.

Oh yay this is awesome news, one of my favourite PS2 games *and* a reason to dust off the move controller that was bundled with my PS2 (at no extra expense) and has never been used :-)

I have this game on the wii. I want to try this game again, I remember being at the part where you have to find the ingredients for the chef.

I just love how they blurred up the video sample for the PS2 version. It does not look that blurry in the actual PS2 game. But there is a graphical improvement in the HD version. It has been touched up to look more sharp in more area, I can tell that for a fact. I think Okami is one of those games that have really put the PS2 to it's limits(I've seen the frame skips in my 60GB PS3 which has the PS2 chips in it for emulation).
