I want to know.

For my first car, I want something cheap, unique, and preferably rear-wheel drive. Basically all the cars on this page:
http://www.japaneseusedcar.ca/
I'd also consider a:
240/180SX
'80s Corolla
Pulsar GTi-R
Honda Beat
Suzuki Cappuccino
Mazda AZ-1
FC or FDRX7 (preferably FC)
(preferably E30) M3
Any Lancer Evo
Impreza

Also, I think that Nissan PAO is pretty cool. Actually, the only car I wouldn't drive on that page is the trucks, Lexuses, and Nissan Diesel wagon.

So wait this is your first car and you want to buy a used car from Japan, sight unseen, have it shipped state side, and they go through the process of trying to get it legally on the road? Not to dash your hopes and dreams but I don't think you've fully thought this through.

Why not just buy a vehicle in the states that was made by a Japanese company? We got 240's, RX-7's, 80's Corolla's, and Impreza's in the states. But considering what insurance is for 16 year old kids now, I would suggest maybe a Honda CRX. They are fun, sporty, cheaper to insure, and you can make the mad tyye JDM yo if you wish.

An E30 M3? LOL, good luck on that, bro. Insurance for me would be a b*tch thanks to their used prices going for $25,000+.

Good luck on getting insured on those 👍

You're currently the same age as I was when I thought I'd get a mid-sixties Mustang or a Lancia Delta as a first car. The moment you factor insurance into the equation, all those cars you linked to suddenly become unobtainable. As for the cars you've listed, as Joey said, you'll spend huge amounts just getting it road legal in America - not to mention the risk of what condition it'll be in when it gets to you.

In any case, why go to all the lengths of importing and legalising a car you're likely to crash anyway? That's not a personal comment, it's just very likely. If it wasn't, insurance costs wouldn't be so high.

Thirdly, how do you know that in 3 years time you'll even be able to afford a car?

By all means by an M3/R34/RX7/whatever. Just don't expect to legally drive it until about 2018.

For my first car, I want something cheap, unique, and preferably rear-wheel drive.

If it's cheap, it's not going to be unique. If it's unique, it's not going to be cheap.

'80s Corolla
That's the only realistic one there. Unless you're very lucky or are earning a lot of money to pay the insurance (which is unlikey at 16).

Trust me - no offense - within 3 years your list will change significantly as your way of thinking will change, since reality will hit you in the face.

Get a HR31! Wikkid first car!

Get a HR31! Wikkid first car!

Except we don't get Skylines in America, it's a shame too.

Anyways get one of these...

It's yellow, that means it's fast.

See If you can find the rare '85-'88 Twin Cam Chevy Nova. You won't find a 4A-GE in a stealthier package. or cheaper. purchase or insurance-wise, even cheaper than that CR-X. (My normal, non-GE '88 4-door comes in under $100 a month.) The Geo Prism GSi, I think it is, also has the 4A-GE. Both are really Japanese cars, Toyota Corollas in an American wrapper.

I'm sure when the insurance company sees "Nova, 4-door sedan/5-door hatchback" or "Prism, 4-door Sedan," they'll ignore the fact that it has a high-winding DOHC engine, give you a nice, low premium, and then slam the next kid in his VTEK Civic coupe. And unique? what's more unique than a Toyota branded as a G.M. car? Eh?

Not necessarily from Japan. Just many of those would be a lot cooler..

25K?! Holy ginger snaps!

I'm poor, my budget is like 10K. Those cars would be nice, but as I said, more realistically I'd probably want an FC or maybe FDRX7, Impreza, Corolla, or some kind of Silvia..

I'd also consider a CR-X.

You aren't going to get many of those cars in the US, and even if you get a used imported car it's still going to be overpriced. On Autotrader an 89 R32 Skyline goes for almost $20,000...for a 19 year old vehicle. $20,000 will buy a nice new car. Once again I'll say CRX.

Don't buy a CRX unless you're going to Arizona to buy it. They're all poo. Rust like nobody's business.

Personally I think you should get a Capuccino or Beat, mainly because they never sold them here and only an idiot would import one unless he planned on turning it into a race car.

If it's cheap, it's not going to be unique. If it's unique, it's not going to be cheap.
And if it's cheap and unique, it's going to be a pile.

If you want a BMW or Ferrari, you could get a pair of Pumas.

First car? Pulsar GTi-R? Lancer Evo? Impreza? You dont live in the real world do you?

Your looking at an age of 25 to get those kind of cars unless your really rich and stupid.

By the time you start driving many of those cars will indeed be "cheaper," but the problem is that many of them are collectors items or were never sold in the US (officially), so your chances of finding one at a reasonable price are slim to none.

If you're looking for something, cheap, unique, and "fast" I'd suggest looking at '88-'90 Chevroelt Beretta GTU/GTZ (that is, if you can find one... They're rare even here in Michigan) which handled surprising well for an American car of its time, and furthermore, the Quad-4 had enough power to keep the drive "quick" enough to keep most people happy.

Otherwise, there is always the MKIII Jetta GLX or the MKIII Golf GTI. With the VR6, they're decently quick, generally aren't too expensive to find these days, although insurance certainly isn't friendly in some cases.

Last-ditch effort, since you've got a while to wait, would be a late-model Ford Focus ST (US-spec) with the 2.3L Mazda engine. They handle well, were built fairly well, and perform pretty well. Can't complain about that...

Wait a second, aren't you like 12 years old?

Why are we having this thread then? If you just wanted to show us the website, then you could've done like a wishlist kinda thing or other.

He's 13. ;) About 5 weeks younger than I am too.

Well, I get my permit in 2 years, and I probably wont even own a car till I'm 18, and I already know that I wont own that '71 Electra 225. :indiff: Any of those, short of the Corolla are unrealistic, but you may have inordinate amounts of money.... Chances are it'll be fairly crappy.

My suggestions for a car, from a 13 and 364/365ths year old (subtle hint);

Something reliable that runs. That should be your only guideline. To hell with badges and nationality.

Despite the wants you may have, it's almost entirely sure that you'll end up with a beater as your first car... gradually you'll earn better licence points, meaning lower insurance prices, and eventually, about 15 years down the road, you'll be able to afford a nice beastly car... which you'll cherish so much you won't even drive it except on weekends.

Hence, why we all cherish the beaters we get when we're younger and pretend they're the best there is.

You seriously have the money to purchae and insure some of these vehicles? I was like you a couple of years before getting my license, thinking of out of reach vehicles as a first vehicle....An FD can range from 12k-20+k, insurance will kill. An Evo or an Impreza will also kill on insurance, so will the M3. Plus having to pay the shipping costs for a japanese car, then trying to insure a right hand drive vehicle at 16yrs old? Doesn't work that easily. Not trying to smash your dreams but I hope you have a good paying job at the moment an are saving each paycheck. I just lucked out with my RX-7 as my first car....

Half of those cars aren't made in America and would have to be imported. For unique, most small Japanese cars aren't unique. Go for a veebub like an mk1 golf.👍

I've driven one before. It was god-awful. First of all it's a '90 GM, which means it's going to die soon. It had lots of grip, but it was like driving a videogame. The engine made noises that sounded like...a '90 GM engine. The transmission had throws that must have been 7 inches long. Who...wha...who...w.ww.who would even consider this car?

Otherwise, there is always the MKIII Jetta GLX or the MKIII Golf GTI. With the VR6, they're decently quick, generally aren't too expensive to find these days, although insurance certainly isn't friendly in some cases.
I like the GTI. But it's heavy and handles like a dog. It's also slower than my Honda.

Focus 👍. I think they're getting spec Focus racing series going, actually. Mainly because they're great cars.

You're a good sport, MAN, but I have a feeling you're in a minority with your young-dumb-kid car choices.

I'm not going to recommend a Honda to you, Sak, because you'd totally F it up.

On the list, 80's Corolla all the way... Of course, even though parts are still made, I doubt they would be cheap. :ouch: Insurance I'm not even going to look at... :scared:

"Reality" is a theme that comes up again and again, there's a reason for that. ;)

My advice to you is to let go of the car dream for another two years and 10 months. Come back then, you never know what the list will look like then.

I would NOT f up a Honda.. Work wheels and a CF splitter and lip spoiler.

Hm. Any of the cars would be really awesome, but my reasonable side HAS been telling me just to get some cheap piece of crap like a Civic or something...

Do you have the funds for any of these vehicles at the moment though? Just wondering.

You wouldn't believe the quality of a later Civic. Get an EK and newer and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

And don't modify your first car. Well, go ahead and do it because apparently us kids like to learn the hard way (as I did), but let me prepare you by saying this. You'll waste a lot of money and then wreck it. Buhleev me. We're idiots. Sage hasn't wrecked yet because he's mmmmmmmm.

He also drives like an old man.

Stop scaring me. I don't want to wreck my first car nor my dream car......I drive maturely, in my dad's SUV, hopefully I'll do the same when behind my 5spd, rwd, no ABS, no TC,2dr rotary powered vehicle. Then again, I'd rather attend an autocross than drive like a jackass on the road..........

I still think something like that would be perfect...and they'll take any '80s FWD Corolla parts...The holy grail would be the Twin Cam version...

1986_corolla_fx16_hinten.jpg

That'd work, too...and they DID sell them here.

You know, not all fast AE8x cars were rear-wheel drive.
