In the past, racing games were all blocky and stuff. Some blocky trapezoid was supposed to be a car. A bunch of of small hash marks are supposed to represent a road. Just like in the fashion world, some designer or some style is sure to step up and be the new trendsetter. Who would be the inspired diva when it comes to racing games in the 1980s? Namco to the rescue with Pole Poisition. Pole Position provided the best racing during the 1980s. Many of us were born in the 1980s, but most of us were in either our cribs, daycare, or elementary. Guess what? You can buy "Namco Museum" and you can find both Pole Positions on the PS2/GameCube/(is it on?) XBOX

PROS: fast-paced racing; (PP2) four competitive tracks

CONS: almost impossible to win a race; perfection is key to winning, you crash, you lose 9 out of 10 times

OTHER INFO: I believe the Pole Position series became the first game with a track based on actual courses. The first P.P. featured Fuji, but call it the "Namco Circuit." In Pole Position 2, the tracks resemble Suzuka ("Wonder"), Indianapolis ("Test," except for the background), and Long Beach ("Seaside"). It also featured perhaps the first use of actual sponsors as the arcade version of PP2 included Marlboro. The game was reborn with Pole Position 64 during the Nintendo 64 days, but I don't think it was a very good game.
