You need to pick 5 cars you really like and buy all the turbos, all the tires, all the upgrades so that you can tweak the hp and tires to suite whatever arbitrary restrictions you'll run into online.
 
I personally have a thing for Japanese sports cars. I run a Supra RZ (700HP+) A 300ZX R32 (600HP+). Subaru Impreza STi C Spec (500HP+) A NSX and a MR2 GT-S (400HP+), a Toyota Soarer GT-T (300HP+), an MR2 G-Limited (200HP+) and finally a Honda Beat for 100HP+. Those are the must haves for me. I'm also tuning an RX-7, and a 3000GT VR-4 Turbo, I don't know what exactly I'll do with these thought. And if I have to embarrass somebody I'll bust out my 259HP Toyota Yaris RS Turbo!
 
I love the Suzuki gsx-r concept. Fully tune to about 280hp and a rear wing, handling beyond anything, eats the lotus Elsie RM for breakfast!!! Beat my mate in this when he had a veyron on grand valley! But this thing is in it's element on tight tracks.
 
Aussie cars. Quite rare, and the fact that not a lot of people have them just adds to the rarity.

In Gt3 (i belive it was) there was a feature when you went to your garage that allowed you to select different tunes for your car. Example - your favorite car could have race soft tires and level three turbo under tune 1 and have sport medium tires with no upgrades except for suspension tuning on tune 2. You could have 3 different setups. I think it would be great if they implemented that again. It would make it a lot easier to take a care from one performance level to another or one suspension setup to another with just one click of the 'x' button.

Yea, it is always a good idea to be prepared, but I just wished that I can have acess to my entire garage for online purposes. :)

Have at least one Le Mans car in the game. You're basically screwed otherwise.
 
We now have access to all cars in our offline garages online :D

For high power races (650 to 800)
I recommend you to have a Lexus IS F RM.

Maximum 715 ish HP but still won against a ZR1 RM limited to 808 HP.
Both cars were on racing softs.
 
I have my favorite full but my two top favorites are:
Arta NSX
And my chrome Honda Odyssey ^_^
 
Loving that I no longer have to sort my favorites before I go onine so I can race the cars I would like to, then realise i have left the one that best fits the regs out so go to get it then can't get back ino the room and have to start over.

Also, my honda nsx-r-lm will embarrass most gt500 cars with downforce tweaks and racing tires only. I finally found one after 8 months of playing everyday.
 
Doesn't sound like much but any fan of British cars should have the old mini's, they're beautiful!
 
Mercedes SLS AMG, Pagani Zonda C12s, Mazda RX-7 GT-X, BMW M3 CSL/GTR/Z4, RUF RGT/3400s, Lotus Esprit Sport 350/Evora, Toyota FT-86 Concept, Honda Type R NSX/Civic/Odyssey, Audi RS4. ~400-650pp. These can handle pretty much anything thrown at them, odyssey excluded.
