Online possible with 100kbps connection?

Pretty self-explanatory really, I only have a 100kbps dsl connection at home, is it possible to have a decent online game with this kind of internet speed? (i dont actually have the game yet thats why im asking)

My guess is most likely not. In the last couplke years during the production of GT5, I've been playing World of Warcraft :P. Those people with that kind of connection are lagging all over the place. My suggestion is upgrade yuor dsl to at least 1.5Mbps. That's what I have and it's super stable and "lightning fast" imo. It's only like $36.99/mo from Qwest. Hope that helps.

37 bucks for 1.5mbs? That's a lot.
I can get myself internet(fiberlink) at 5mbits speed with unlimited traffic for 19 euros a month, that's 38 bucks I think. DSL is less cool because upload speed sucks and because it's a bit more expensive, but still way less than your price. And this is a pretty poor country. Currently I have DSL. :(

francescop1, you should get fiberlink if you can, you don't even need a modem for it so it's best stable, you'll need only a router if you want to connect to more than one computers.

I pay for a 4 mbs connection but in reality I only get 70-400kbs download depending on the server.

2004TSX does world of warcraft require that you pay a monthly fee? If so lag with any broadband connection is unacceptable.

As for GT5 P I think it comes to the point that PD is taking the cheapest possible route in their online modes.

I haven't played GT5:P myself yet, but I heard that if the host quits everyone is disconnected. Does this mean that PD is using the laggy method of having individual users to host online races on their PS3 ala Xbox Live? If so shame on you PD. If not whatever method their using is flawed, because 10 online players all on broadband, at any speed, should not be an issue

It's pathetic that in this age when everyone online has broadband lag is still an issue. I remember not too long ago experiencing smooth online play even with 56k through a variety of games like NASCAR 2003, FlightSimulator 98, Age of Empires 2 etc etc.

Nowadays simple 2-4 player online games like Raw vs Smackdown are smeared with lag. My brother was playing Rainbow Vegas 6 #2 and complained that the lag made the game unplayable. Yet I'm able to play with 64 players online in Battlefield 2 with minimal to no lag. I'm able to race inches from 40 other cars online in NASCAR 2003 and experience no lag. But 16 cars in GT5 is such a chore? I think PD is showing just how much of a rookie they are when it comes to online

Same here, I can't get DL's faster than 400/500Kb on my 4Mb cable connection, and that's on a good day.

As for the lag issue, it all comes down to the use (or lack of, in GT5:P's case) of dedicated servers. 💡
Even R:FOM, one of the first games to come out for the PS3, handled 40 players simultaneously online on the same match and, as far as I've experienced, no lag whatsoever.

I've done packet analysis on the JP version of the game, the stream rate DURING a game is approximately 80-150Kbps.

As you can see, at 100Kbps you will JUST be within acceptable limits. So you COULD probably play, but you could have NOTHING else using your connection at the same time, NOT EVEN a web browser running and loading webpages, because anything that takes even just 20-30Kbps or similar will lag your connection out.

Hope that helps.

people are forgetting a crucial element:

i don't think you will be able to download the updates with 100kb. we know you have to try multiple times, and we know its painfully slow, so downloading the patch will be a major task on its own.

you will probably only be able to use online for the timetrials. that's easy on the bandwidth.

i had 600k up until thursday, and then i switched to 2mb. altough you only use 100-200 for the races, a faster connection helps a lot. now i'm able to join the races without errors, wheares before i had something like 10 attempts and one race.

also, the time to join a race improved dramatically.

if you can't change your connection speed, then you will probably be stuck with only time trials.

its a shame tough. hope you can sort that out

how bizar are the differences still out there regarding download speed!!!
i have 20mb/s from orange here in holland and its about 25euros a month(35$us i think..)i can download movies @ 2mb/s!!!!!!!!!!!

well,conclusion...:the world didn't sincronise yet...thats for sure!!

There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration and not just you're download speeds. For example how you are connecting to each other i.e dedictated servers or P2P. Then you have to take into consideration latency and how many m/s does it take to ping the information to the server. Also worth noting is your upload speeds because if your connecting via P2P and your the host you will require decent upload speeds. Lastly how well the network code has been coded because on COD4 on the Xbox 360 there is very little lag and yet RB6V2 is shocking because it has been poorly coded.

Personally I feel the minimum for online gaming is 512kbps download and 240kbps upload. Many people go on about download speeds but tend to forget about uploading because at the end of the day when your online gaming you're not only downloading but uploading the information to the server.

@IVORBIGUN....isnt it so that a fast dowload speed automaticly gives you a fast upload speed aswell??
i mean,if you look at sites of providers, you can shoose several different packages with different downloadspeeds, but the upload speed just comes with it...so you can shoose to pay moore for higher download, but not upload...!!
or am i way off here...??

In some cases but not all. Here in the UK there are some ISPS that offer 8mb download but only 248kbps upload and then we have some offering 4mb download and 480kbps upload.

Compared to the rest of Europe the UK is really lagging behind especially countries like Denmark for example. We do have some providers offering 20mb download, 1.5mb upload via LLU but unfortunately not many exchanges are enabled for this at the moment but thankfully over the next few months this will change.

The other problem we face in the UK is our bandwidth being restricted during peak hrs. I have a friend who runs at 5mb during the day and yet after 6pm his connection drops to 156kbps!

Maybe I should move to Holland because I have visited your country on holiday and found it a wonderful country with wonderful people.

I pay like £5 for 8MB and thats part of a Talk Talk package (£11 Line Rental) thing so technically its "free broadband".

Its really good for online, not particularly amazing but reasonable. GT5P works fine on it.

Wow. I never knew the uptake of broadband has reversed the effects of continental drift.

In any event if you can achieve 20KB/s down and 8KB/s up you should be fine.
