Past previous GT series, I've been using right analog stick for acceleration/break and L2 R2 for shifting. Recently, I've heard a friend tell me he uses L2R2 for gas, brake, and right stick as shifting. I've tried that setting and it seems to work well in drifting. But as for regular racing, it does not feel comfortable and my old habits keeps pressing other buttons I've used for soo long. I assume it's matter of time that I become familiar to the new layout. Anyway, share your controller layouts if you'd like, and reasons why might help convince me to try it as well!

Ran this setup since GT5

L2 Brake
R2 Gas
L1 Look Back
R1 Headlights
Square Shift down
X Ebrake
Circle Upshift
Triangle Nitrous

Steer with left stick
Left/Right view with right stick.
L3 is Horn
R3 is Windshield Wipers

Edit: In GT5 Triangle was Reverse, As there was no Nitrous.

I might used square button as brake because L2 seems to take longer to brake when I need to tap on brake. Although I can see why some people like L2 for braking (sensitivity), for me, specially in a FF car, I use square as brake for quick tap, versus L2, which seems to have this lagging phase due to the trigger being more sensitive. In that case, I'll need to use L1 L2 as shifting.
Edit: grrr... I wish control layout can be switched for drift and race like in car settings instead of having to log out a session, goto homepage, and rearrange it again

R2 - Go
L2 - Not so go
R1 - Open menu (D pad navigate)
L1 - Look behind
LAS - steer
L3 - Windscreen wipers
RAS - Gear change
R3 - Ghost on/off
X - Nitro
SQ - Lights flash
O - Handbrake
TR - Horn

It's all down to personal preference at the end of the day, but don't use the standard hit X button and hope controls that we used in the old days...

D pad for various lights/wipers/look left and right
R stick drive brake
L stick steering/horn
L2/R2 down/up gears
Sq reverse
R1 handbrake
L1 look back over shoulder

I did try having look left/right on R stick too, and it was a terrible idea.

R2: acc
L2: break
Right stick: shift
Circle: handbrake
Triangle: reverse
L1/R1: look-back/switch view
Square: nitrous

Forgot what i use X for, but these are my settings, i find they work well for pretty much everything, as using triggers for acc and breaking helps you use certain percentages of throttle and brakes, which is good so you don't spin out or lock brakes when playing without TCS and ABS.

X-- Gas
[]-- Brake
O-- Handbrake
R2-- Upshift
L2-- Downshift
R1-- Nitro
L1-- Look behind
R3-- RA Menu toggle
D-Pad-- RA Menu Navigation
LAnalogstick-- Steering
RAnalogstick-- Left/Right View
Select-- Camera
Start-- Pause
L3-- Horn or Lights I switch it sometimes
^-- Reverse but will change that to something else

Sensitive thumbs so I race with this settings :D

Is it just me or does using right analog stick for gas seem less sensitive between mid - throttle to full throttle vs. R2 trigger, which seems more sensitive at all range of pressure?

I say this because I find drifting using R2 for gas much controllable (such as doing tandem), vs. When using the right stick, it feels like there is less sensitivity. Specially, while sliding at full throttle, it's harder to manage exact pressure between letting off throttle to 'trigger to the metal' full on gassing.

It may be just me, for my controller might be the issue, but this is what I felt between using R2 and right analog stick.

Old school :

X = gas
[] = brake

O = handbrake
Triangle = reverse

R1 = upshift
L1 = downshift

R2 = rear view
L2 = ghost on/ off

I know you will find my set up is weird, but i am used to it and i cant seem to switch to R2/L2 for gas and brake like you all...

My hands would need too much readjustment...

Alternatively i have the right stick as gas (up, right and down)and brake (left)... yes another weird configuration. So i can either use the button or the stick at the same time...
