Hi,
I'm considering a Saab 9-3 as a new family car, I'm just wanting to know whether it is good and if not what should I get for similar money?

Depends on where you live.

The 9-3 is getting a bit long in the tooth now, i'm sure for similar money you can get something a bit more modern.

No. Might as well buy an Opel/Vauxhall, you get the same things for less money.

I wouldn't bother with it because it's getting old. The pre-facelift models, at least here in the US, were plagued with engine reliability problems also. I don't know anybody with one who hasn't replaced the turbocharger at least once.

If your kids aren't 200lbs each, then the size is very good. :)

The problem is not the seats but rather the boot which is very small, at least in the estate version. Don't know where you live but in Sweden they are becoming very cheap second hand, partly due to the fact that the model is getting on in years but also from uncertainty whether or not Saab as a car manufacturer will even exist tomorrow. I wouldn't buy one.

Please don't quadruple post ( ), use the multi-quote function.

New family car in Australia? What's your budget and what are your priorities?

I'd vote for the Mazda6/Atenza. You can even get it in wagon form. Decently economical and decently punchy with the 2.5 and the automatic, great interior, great handling and ride... sexy... and, did I mention there's a wagon? There's also a hatchback version, if I recall right.

Subaru Legacy maybe?

Not sure which models are available in Australia. If you want posh-er than a Mazda, i guess you're looking towards 3-Series BMW, C-class Merc or Audi A4. Don't know if they're in your price range though.

Legacy? Posher than a 6? Errh... not really. You'll be wanting an AudiBenzBeemer, then... or a Volvo (which, at least isn't going out of production in the near future)... the S60 is an excellent car... not sure if it's within your price range...

Part of the problem with the GM-era 9-3 models is that they are unreasonably hit and miss with their drivability and overall likability. That is not to say that they are bad vehicles, but more or less, that there are a good many more that are better or worse. Now, as a closet Saabophile, I'm far more fond of cars like the 9-3 SportCombi and 9-3 Turbo X than I should be. The rather-fancy (for GM) 2.8L twin-turbo V6 produces a rather silly amount of power.

But, they're difficult to find, expensive to repair, and so on and so on. So, if you're ready to join the cult of Saab, then I'd say, "why not?" Otherwise... You're better off getting a Volkswagen. Pretty similar, generally a lot better, certainly a bit more sexy.

Get a Passat CC then?

Holden = Opel/Vauxhall, although Opel itself is heading Down Under next year with a new Astra and the Insignia I believe.

Saab is now also owned by Dutch supercar company Spyker, but a new 9-3 hasn't been announced or released from them. The new 9-5 is said to be a step in the right direction for Saab, but not nearly the huge step it needs considering its price and its rivals.

There's loads of choices for that sort of price. For bang for buck in terms of its interior and kit there is the Honda Accord Euro Luxury w/Navigation, which won Wheels COTY in 2008. Great to drive and you get heaps of features for the relatively small price you pay (RRP $39,990). 10-speaker audio with MP3, full sat-nav, leather heated seats, dual-zone climate control and chilled cubby holes. The back row does have limited legroom for adults but for a child it's perfect.

The Skoda Octavia vRS comes in wagon or sedan form and has a better engine than the Accord's i-VTEC (VW 2.0L turbo 4-cyl, 197kW) but the interior does look a little cheaper. Fair bit more space inside though and from what I've read it drives very well too. These are a fair bit rarer to find and the 2.0L turbo models aren't new, but they're at most $35,000.

Other choices? You can pick up a Mazda 6 MPS for well within that price range; an FG FPV F6 Typhoon is also worth checking out if you can deal with the fact that to most it's just a tarted-up Falcon - the boosted V6 at the time gave most of FPV and HSV's line-up a run for their money; it also has a pretty well-sorted chassis and loads of space. Brand new Subaru Liberty 2.5GTs retail at about $57,000 and you can get a fully optioned WRX STi for that sort of money as well.

If you don't mind something a bit older there is the well-acclaimed E46 BMW M3 and the E60 5-Series. The M3 is more a driver's car than a well-sorted family car but that's where the bigger 5-Series comes into play.

These are all good choices for the money but if its a compromise between luxury and space you want rather than how it drives then I'd look at the Accord, Liberty and the BMW 5-Series. That being said though these are also great cars to drive.

You'd be better off with a Honda Accord, but owning a SAAB is definetely on my list of car dreams to accomplish. I would.
