It works but it shouldn't be a secret until then. You can usually get a pretty good guess based on what type of competition you're up against, but not always right.

Everybody uses the same tires in the race, so you don't hav to check every single car. No they don't use the standard tyres. The Nurburgring 4hours and some road cars use race mediums.
