What would be the new 'standard' size for TV's for today?
Searching for a new TV to buy, a 55" LED has caught my eye, so has a 60" Plasma...
Any suggestions? please take into consideration this TV will be used for everything and not just dedicated to games etc.

There isn't, really. It all depends on how far away you're able to view it from, I suppose - a 60" in a 9'x7' bedroom would be a bit uncomfortable, for example.

Also worth noting that, at the end of the day, you'll get used to whatever screen size is placed in front of you. In our flat we use my 26" Sony and it's absolutely fine, but the room its self could accommodate a 47" one quite happily too.

I just plugged my viewing distance (12') and TV size (50") into this calculator and it tells me that the THX recommended distance for a 50" set is 5.6' or I need a 107.4" set.

Good luck with that!

Initially, having gone from a 32" to a 50", the screen looked enormous, but now that everyone is used to it, I could happily go larger.

That's what she said!

I have a fairly standard living room, and even though i have a 42" Plasma, i would have easilly been as happy with a 40".

The only real way to tell is to visit a few friends with a similar sized room. Forget showrooms when picking size, i've seen perfectly good TV's at 32" made to look mickey mouse because they're placed right next to 60". When in truth, the 32" would look just about right in smaller living room.

When you do decide what set you are going to get, buy the next size up.
Its like buying clothes for kids, you have to go one size bigger otherwise you'll regret it 6 months down the track. You wont be thinking about the extra money you spent 1 year on.

Thanks for the input :) according to my room size and distance from viewing area, it seems that 55" or lower would suffice the THX standards..
