Overtaking in F1

Its funny that you've come around to David Richards' thoughts too Ludes, because yes, wings and aerodynamics are pretty irrelevant.
Only in the sense that I disagree with the idea that Prodrive should have been allowed onto the grid because of the part Dave Richards played in their 2008 failure. His theory here is sound; it's his execution in other places that needs work.
 
As I recall, ground effect stuff had some fairly large safety issues. If the underside of the body touches the ground, or if the seals around the edges of the car fail then you suddenly lose all downforce and go flying off into the weeds.

Given how safety concious F1 is these days, I imagine those obstacles would have to be overcome before they'd even consider allowing ground effects to return.
