I've been having a bruised feeling in my sternum like somebody punched me really hard, but I don't know what it's from. I first noticed it friday when I was working with my friend and it somewhat hurt to lean forward to get tools. Saturday I woke up and it didn't hurt at all the entire day, even when working with my friend again. When I woke up on sunday it hurt more than it did before, and by the end of the evening it hurt just to bend down a little bit. This morning I woke up and it was the same as it was last night, and maybe a little worse.

The only thing I can think of that could have caused any strain was putting on and taking of my friends tire more than a few times this weekend. Any help would be great?

It's probably nothing to worry about, you can bruise that area quite easily by over extending whilst exercising (or doing any physical activity that might strain that area). But like anything, check it out with your doctor if the pain doesn't go away within a week.

I'm no doctor, but report back in three days and tell us how it feels.

Could be related to your intercostal muscles. But, as it's a chest pain then don't mess about and get it seen to ASAP.

I think I know what it is. I was taking my friends tire off to get to his wheel bearing and one of the nuts was on really tight. He tried to get it off and couldn't so I tried as hard as I could and couldn't get it off either. I must have strained it then, and because I've been driving a lot it's gotten worse. Without power steering backing out and getting out of my apartment complex takes quite a lot of use from whatever muscle it is, not even counting whatever slower turns I do while on the road. My windows also take a decent bit of force to roll down too, and I open and close both of them every time I drive.

I just need to rest for a while, too bad I have to be a backstage person for an Easter play, I'll just have to live through it until Monday.

If you're sure you know the cause - and from what you said it does sound muscular - then try taking regular anti-inflammatory medication for a few days (unless you're asthmatic, then don't!). We use Ibuprofen over here, I'm not sure what the equivalent is in the US.

Ibuprofen is the same over here. It's actually all I use for aches/pains, as acetaminophen doesn't do anything for me.

It does make sense using Ibuprofen rather than your equivalent to our paracetamol when you have a headache etc as pain stems from inflammation. And it's also worth bearing in mind that they compliment each other, so you can take Ibuprofen and paracetamol (acetaminophen) together, as long as you don't exceed the stated dose :)

Nice to see that nurses in the UK (you) and the US (my wife) both say the same thing! 👍

Paracetamol is an excellent pain killer, for mild pain and also if combined with other things.
Cancer sufferers often say that paracetamol is one of the only things which works to keep their pain under control (as a background analgesia, combined with other things) and it doesn't cause constipation. Unfortunately it's far too easy to overdose which is why many people are wary of it. Taken as prescribed, it's extremely safe :)
