I know this has been talked about before but does anyone know the real reason to this stupid paint system? I mean this is the "real driving simulator" so then why have this stupid paint system? I mean in real life you can paint a car whatever you want, of course the paint and labor might have different costs. Why can I only paint one car Imola Red if I have the chip, seems really stupid.
And what about chromes and matte's very tough to find and people want stupid amounts of paint or car values for them, I hate to compare it to NFS, but you can do all different paint types whenever you want and whatever color you want in those series.

I could understand basic solid paint costing 2K credits, Matte costing 5K, Chrome 8K... in fact tell me where I can get a decent paint job in real life for $2,000 (US) and I will take my wife's car there today, she always wanted an orange SUV, hahaha

People wonder why other people cheat with "glitches" in the game, well this is why, because PD sets up stupid rules like this in the first place, so guess what, if I ever get a Matte painted car that gives me the chip, I will just keep sending it back and fourth between accounts everyday to rack up the paint chips for it! Although the 2 matte cars I have gotten don't give you a chip with them, are there any? or do matte paints just come as rewards?

Some cars can be purchased in matte colors, like the LFA, though most of them are gifts.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem with keeping mattes and chromes as 1 time use for the sake of the game aspect, but everything else is just silly.

The chips should be unlimited, or give us a color wheel or something. Or better yet let each car have all the color options that were actually available from the factory, then add some weird color chip system on top of that for crazy colors.

It's obnoxious that the used lot only gives me cars in the same colors. There are some standard factory colors that aren't in the game at all from what I can tell, and no way to recreate them. Terrible design.

The post below outlines what i was thinking better.

Yes the paint system is arbitrary and silly.

Good thing GT isn't called The Real Painting Simulator.

Painting =/= Driving. End of story.

Terrible answer.

Neither do car washes, photomode, or half the other random features in this game.

If the game was *only* about driving there would be much less to do. The game is as much a car collecting game as anything.

Anyway, even if paint=/=driving, why implement a terrible painting system? To make the driving look so good?

I don't hate the chip system 100%, but when I first started playing it I thought getting the chip "unlocked" the color meaning I could use that color as much as I wanted for cars and wheels, I would have been okay with this, but to limit painting to once per chip is the silly part. And I also noticed that used cars are always the same color when they appear, I bought a Laguna Seca Blue M3, 2 days later it was back, a week later there it is again, how about an different color? And if I walked into a body shop and gave them the color I wanted they could make it, just like a paint store can match colors, so why can't we do it in the game? I understand not wanting every car in online races to have chrome and matte paint, they want it to be more unique, but if you give us a custom color option it will be unique for creative people.

So if you buy a LFA with matte paint do you get the paint chip? There are some cars that you don't get a paint chip with, is that because they are reward/gift only cars?

A colour wheel would not have any value to it. I really can't think of the word right now but finding special paints has a value to it, like winning new cars. It would be like being able to buy all the cars straight away.. boring.

I do see your point and thats why I said I am not 100% against the chip system, BUT why the need for multiple chips? I mean there is value in finding new paints but to limit your use of them?

EXCEPT I guess to answer my own question, it would be for trading, they wouldn't be able to allow trading of chips if usage was unlimited.

This can be said about numerous aspects of the game

Why can't we rewind/FF replays?

Why is the XP system so messed up?

Why is the money system so messed up? (98,000Cr for a 3 minute race around Indy, 78,000~ Cr for a 60 lap race around Grand Valley)

Why are the prize cars always garbage?

Why can you only select your racing suit once and then never change it?

Why isn't there a 'Grid Start' option for the Top Gear test track so we can imitate the show?

Why are the Top Gear challenges unbelievably frustrating and boring?

Why are some challenges extremely easy and others otherworldly difficult?

Why did PD lie about damage and dirt?

Why does the online aspect of the game suck?

Why is B-Spec a separate game mode?

WHY did PD spend so much time developing things that no one cares about and no one would miss instead of working on the above?

The list goes on and on...

I personally like the paint system, because it adds some rarity & variety. If everybody could just go to the paint shop & paint their entire stable matte black, chrome, or matte grey, I wonder what racing online would look like? I like that it has built an ecomony with the online trading community, and has encouraged some creativity.

I agree with L1ONE on this one.....I like the way the car system works in that it creates an online trading community, & allows for variety & rarity, and I think the paint system does the same.

Well not everyone wants to paint all their cars matte black or chrome, maybe just a few cars, and people like different colors, so you would still be in races against cars with matte orange, chrome black, pearl ... I think the bigger problem will eventually be everyone driving around in X1s

And for someone like me, who doesn't race online (yet) who cares!

Really stupid system.

You can never repaint your Mclaren F1 to its original colour - you never receive the chip with the car.

The system is not a well thought out "feature" - it is an irritation and detraction form the object - paint your car.

Either have the option, or dont.

This "feature" is just another immature "addon". This franchise needs mature and developed features and options, not beta test features and hassles.

Exactly.

I also believe cultural differences in how Asian/Western players approach games hugely influences this. In Japan many games have this "collect em all" mentality, where as in western games its more about the story, structure, and an overall cohesive playing experience.

There would be a million more moans if they didn't have the option to paint your cars at all.

I don't understand the need to take away the gaming factor from this game, it's primarily a game secondly a simulator.

As for the Mclaren, you could just repurchase the car and you'd have the chip.

Collecting paint means you collect additional cars, which helps you attain the 250-whatever paint chips and 1,000 cars trophy.

Anybody know if there is a way to preview your with the new paint before you actually paint it? Kind of like with everything else in GT auto, like you can see the new rims before you actually buy them.

Somebody else answered this in some different thread. To preview, you can basically paint the car and if you don't like it, exit the game via the ps button before leaving the paintshop. The game won't save your painting of that car before you leave, so it will be in the old color and your creds will be like before you did that painshop.

To get back on topic: The paint chip system sucks. Make it so that that color is unlocked forever, not only for one use. I like cars with rims in the same color like the body which requires 2 chips right now.

To all those ppl complaining that the game is not 'finished': I'm a 100% with you on this. I suppose Sony pressed PD to release b/c they needed a major title to beef up xmas sales. Over here in Germany a major ad campaign is running to fire my suspicion.

Anyway, in case someone who tries to decide weather to buy or not to buy this game reads this: I have about 20 ps3 games. I havn't spent as much time with any of them as I have spent with gt5. Its a must have if you own a ps3 (MAYBE with the exeption of ppl owning a xbox as well 'cause of forza which I don't know 'cause I don't have an xbox).

So there is no "official" way to preview paint? Thats another deduction for PD:grumpy:

Aside from that little rotating body thingy you get when you selected the chip, not that I'm aware of.

Ya, but that hardly gives you a good idea. I mean they implemented that feature for other cosmetic items like rims, wings and body kits, just not color. Weird.

I do like that colors have a 'cool factor' now which is nice, but I just think it would be better if only the mattes and more obscure options were rare, while standard colors were more available. And as I said earlier, used cars should come in more colors. I want to paint my BMW Phoenix Yellow, a factory option, which as far as I can tell is not in the game. Pretty annoying for what seems like a simple feature. I could say the same for a number of my other cars. They come from the used dealer in the 'wrong' color for me, and the factory color I want is not in the game at all.
