PC RTS game advice needed please.

Hello, I am looking for a PC game and was hoping for a few suggestions. Its got to be sort of similar to Command and Conquer but it needs to have real world units (WW1/WW22 or modern with online skirmish) I think they are known as RTS games. Its a gift for someone, can anyone make a suggestion? It doesnt have to be brand new just good. I can look up reviews when I know what to look for. Thanks in advance.

If the above is a little too hardcore (mates who are commissioned officers in the British Army have struggled with some scenarios, even though it's a game about their job pretty much!) try Men of War. Super, SUPER fun online.
 
The review on combat mission says its excellent but it looks hard to play, gotta have a sharp mind for that one!
 
My two suggestions are out there. Men of War and Company of Heros.

Also if your into the hardcore Sim RTS then Hearts of Iron (2 or 3) is worth a look.
 
Thanks thats a few more to look into, after reading a couple of reviews I might get one myself, they have come a long way since C+C + Age of Kings.
 
For some really good modern day RTS action try World in Conflict. Even though it's a few years old now, it needs a pretty hefty machine to run it.
 
No love for Commando's? Commando's 2 was a masterpiece and could be picked up dirt cheap.
 
I have looked on amazon and all the games mentioned can be had for between £3 and £12 (for myself now). I got company of heroes for the gift.

Thanks for your help guys, I have ordered C+C generals to get me back into the genre £3.50 inc. delivery and ill get a more complicated one after if I dont get my butt kicked too bad :)
