I've discovered (on this forum or elsewhere) that it's only if the front half of your car makes contact w/something at a certain speed, your fault or not - my experiments with that have proven to be true.

So (all purists please close your eyes), if there are some tight corners with walls that make a smooth bend (ie no corners/sharp edges), then just make contact with the wall at the start of the bend, and then let it 'guide' you around the corner. Its an effective (but cheap) way of going quickly through hairpins. I've found that it works really well on the Tahiti Maze track.
He's right, if you can slide your butt around so it comes in contact with the wall first, you won't get penalized, it is cheap, but effective if that's what it takes for you to win.

I like the idea of penalizing cheap driving, but 95% of the penalities that I have received arent my fault. Penalties are given by hits to the front of the car, so if you still want to drive dirty, just slide into him. The penalty does not solve anything and only frustrates me because it is the dumbass AIs fault that they are given (they always seem to cut me off...).
I agree, I like the idea of the penalty for cheap-cheezy drivers that like to slam into the back of you when coming into a tight turn - but they should give the same penalty to the AI as well in the SCE's
I guess it's along the same line of the AI getting the 'line' advantage - i.e. when they can smack you silly but unless you clobber them at a critical moment, they just make a quick adjustment and are right back on track. I really hate the AI's unwavering dedication to the line and will just plow right into you even if you're taking the corner properly.
The AI in this game needs some serious work.
HOWEVER, I do wish we could use the penalty system in the two player battles so the player on the #2 controler can't just blast you on the 1st turn and get away unscathed.
The penalty isn't much of a substitue for a damage model, but if it were applied to the AI equally and selectable in 2-player mode, I feel it's better than nothing at all.
Of course, one of the main points though of GT in general (IMHO) is to learn to drive in such a way that a damage model shouldn't be necessary at all.
DON'T hit the wall, DON'T hit the other cars, DON'T...wait - I'm dreaming of those perfect laps again aren't I
