Personal Playlist Online?

I created a blank .mp3 file so that I could race without background music but still hear the "Finish" and "Gold Medal" songs.

This worked perfectly while racing offline, but yesterday I went did some online races for the first time, and there was background music while I was racing (I can't stand this!). It wasn't my music as the only song I have on my PS3 is the blank .mp3 I created, so I assume it must be the default in-game music. Do Personal Playlists only work while offline? Is this some sort of glitch?

Why do people use blank playlists? Just go to the BGM section and click Race BGM and uncheck all of them. Problem solved permanently.
