And he's going to head up EA Sports. Bailing out?

SAN FRANCISCO, July 17 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday the head of its gaming business, Peter Moore, would leave the company to join Electronic Arts Inc(ERTS.O: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's biggest video game publisher.

Moore will be replaced by Don Mattrick, a former Electronic Arts executive who has served as an adviser to Microsoft on video games for the past six months.

Moore will stay at Microsoft until Sept. 1, though Mattrick will start his new job on July 30.

The announcement comes two weeks after Microsoft said it would take a charge of up to $1.15 billion to fix an "unacceptable" number of broken Xbox 360 game consoles.

It also comes on the heels of E3, the video game industry's annual expo, where Moore had a highly visible role as host of Microsoft's press briefing. Microsoft said there was nothing to be read into the timing of Moore's departure.

"It's just how things fall. A lot of this timing was driven by Electronic Arts," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division that includes the Xbox 360. "Peter's a sports nut, so it's a good job for Peter."

A month ago, EA's new chief executive, John Riccitiello, reorganized the publisher into four units to help make it more efficient.

As head of EA Sports, Moore will take charge of some of the company's biggest money-spinning franchises, such as "Madden" football, "FIFA" soccer and "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" golf.

"What I want to try to do is ... look at new ways to grow that business both domestically and internationally," Riccitiello told Reuters.

Woot, Peter Moore gets to do what he does best, deal with complete BS and make money from it because people will just buy something because of the label on it.

EA and him are the perfect match.

You won't see me crying over it: While I do respect P-Mo and his crew, I've always been a J Allard guy, so, whatever. He'll do fine at EA, and I'm sure he won't have much of a problem getting things the way he wants it.

So, the lying dealer of PR shlock goes from a position where that is most of his job to a position where that is all of his job? I expect Madden sales to double (don't get me wrong: he is good at what he does, but I've hated him even when he worked at Sega).

Looks like most of the players in Madden will now wind up getting overheated and stop running at certain points in the game.

Why has it been EA this EA that lately? Hell, I was at a family party and two family members were trying to get jobs there. :odd:

Ea is branching out to 4 (real) divisions/brands. Each with its own president and so on. Madden sales wont double just because Peter more is Ea Sports' president.

I wonder what he sounds like saying PS3 will be the lead platform for EA sports new year.

Well, Madden 08 on the Wii already has the glitch where the camera occasionally just watches them stand around after a touchdown while the play clock ticks down. The only way to get out of it is to exit the game, losing all Madden points earned.

You know, I was wondering about similar stuff. Didn't Moore talk a lot of smack about Sony and PS3? Now, they have to play nice, smile and shake hands, like nothing ever happened? I think it will be extremely awkward, even in the corporate world.

I doubt it will be very ackward for him at EA dealing with Sony. In fact, I would think it will be more ackward for him dealing with MS since there are rumors of Sony getting priority in the development of the next Madden game.

Regarding the Scapegoat comment above... :sly:
I think there is some truth to that... It's always easiest to blame problems on the guy who just left rather than call out people still at the party. :ouch:
