Reason for the copy protection is trophies, if people could download saves they could cheat to boost their score and level. Been like this on all games since 2008.
Still people quote that old chestnut. Total baloney. Most games do not tie saves to the PS3 but only a PSN ID AND THAT WORKS.

btw, how many threads do we need about this ?

PD did this same thing with GT PSP... and when my PSP died, I lost everything. I found out that you can't load a save created on one PSP on anther one. At least I create a backup on a computer, USB flash drive, or another memory stick in case mine got corrupted. With the PS3 and GT5, you can't even do that. Totally unacceptable.

I use 2 PS3's. One in my bedroom during the day and early evening, then the living room at night (share a room with my 10 year old brother so I can play through the night). It is a must for me to be able to transfer the save so I can use both PS3s instead of moving mine around anywhere.

Also annoying that they put a USB stick in with the signature edition and you cant transfer saves.

Yes, agreed, with an old PS3 I'd really like to backup my save just in case something goes wrong with the machine - I couldn't face (or have time to) to run everything again. Fine to tie the save to the PSN ID though.

This is my first experience with PS3, so I have a question which is probably going to seem "noobish" to most of you, but is important to me anyway.

Does the game-save copy protection on GT5 also prevent me from moving to a new console? Doesn't the PS3 allow me to move everything to another console via CAT5?

I'm at 20% now, and have to return the console I just got. Am I going to be forced to start all over?

I don't like this idea since it means there would be no point putting in effort into gt mode.

You just download a 100% save with a gazillion dollars and all the cars. The game is now ruined both offline and online.

For whom?

There are two ways:

Make a backup to an external drive via backup utility. But, this backup will only work on the exact same PS3! Not another one.

Make a transfer to another PS3 via transfer utility. But, if you transfer the data, everything will be erased on the source PS3. The transfer can only be made via CAT5. So you have to have two PS3 to do that.

Okay, that will work for me! Hopefully it includes all my cars, licenses, trophies, and replays.

Has anyone done this on GT5 yet? Any bugs/issues? Tragedies? Or am I treading uncharted waters here?

I think the best bet would be to let you back up your A spec level (its used for online races right?) and maybe game save online, but still let you transfer your game save to someone else. That way if someone just wants all the cars they can get them, but their A spec level will still be zero

Agreed. It is essential to have a way to easily backup your game progress, right now it's just not possible... :nervous:

However, if somebody has 2 PS3s, something like this should work:
1) Backup your HDD on PS3 A.
2) Transfer data from PS3 A to PS3 B (data on PS3 A is removed).
3) Restore the backup to PS3 A.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Still, it isn't acceptable and it is a backwards way of doing something that should be really straightforward and easy.

👎

This is a massive issue and it needs a whole lot more attention if we're to get it resolved.

I'm perfectly fine with the saves being linked to my PSN account, but we absolutely must be allowed to back them up to an external device.

It's only a matter of time before people start to lose saves that they've put hundreds of hours of time into.

That sounds like a plan ! Can anyone confirm if this works?

Yeah, would be nice if somebody confirmed it. But it should be possible, hopefully... I guess it's better than nothing.

Yeah, I'd go for that if it works, maybe once a week backup.

Still a pain in the ass, but better than months of driving down the drain !

TRUST me its not mister Kaz, its sony. and my friend at sony here in san diego assured me if we are serious about this petition they will at least hear us out. because they take customer service pretty serious. another reason i would ALWAYS go sony of microsoft even though alot of my customers, family, and friends are at the redmond based company.

I think that when you do a backup you have to restore it to your (account) PS3 ID What I do is do a backup on a 500 GB extrenal HDD which takes about 10 hours and I do have another PS3 (both are fatboys) that if ever needed such as YLOD I could have 2nd PS3 put on my account then download backup. I'm not sure about backup only for 1 PS3. The reason for the 10 hour backup is lots of demo's and music.

Easy solution for those saying it wouldn't be fair or whatever for people who just download the save.

Make teh Save so it only works with your PSN account, Fallout 3 and New Vegas has it so you can't Save, other games have it restricted to do stuff wioth different user save, like earn trophies and such. WHat PD needs to do is release a patch that deactivates the locking system, but make the game detect other user same and disable any content that is with that save

I agree; I lost my 98% GT4 memory card once, whole damn summer wasted. It really isn't fun at all to lose GT saves (yes I cried :( ).

Reason for the copy protection is trophies, if people could download saves they could cheat to boost their score and level. Been like this on all games since 2008.

1. Trophies are separate from Save Data (wouldn't affect copying saves)
2. Trophies are PSN ID-specific (unless you were the first person to get the trophies, you wouldn't be able to get them)
3. Trophies are NOT retroactive (there is no other way to get trophies other than getting them in the game, the right way)

I will sign it. But not for cheating purposes. Just to backup or move from account to account.

I'd better start saving for a new PS3 then ! And keep my finger crossed the old boy lasts for a while !

I would think a solution could be better implementation of stat tracking/your garage on the game's website.

Look at how Killzone 2 tracked your campaign and multiplayer progress and stats. Something like that backed up to your profile could solve this.

Of course, it's really easy to say that, and would probably take months of dev time and hundreds of thousands of dollars to actually do......but we can dream, can't we?
