i have a rather stange fear of modern submarines, :wierd: its true if i see one on the telly i don't run, i just stare petrified like its gonna kill me they look strange.
And pictures of aleins, horrible faces, large black eyes, anal probing!!!

And i love heights!!!

Oh, and ever since i saw the blair witch project, i fear going outside, in the dark on my own, i don't mind been in darkness on my own in the house, but anywhere else i crap myself!

With my fear of hights, I stupidly rode "The Mamba"(205 ft rollercoaster:eek: ) on a band trip when a bunch of freinds told me too...on the way up, I was dying. I looked at this one part on the back of the seat infront of me, but my perefrial vision was able to see the parking lot and I was gonna scream but my friends were there(didn't want to look dumb) but the ride was fun after the top(although at the bottom my spine compressed and after I got off I had some back pain)...

OK, my closest thing to a phobia is fear of heights. On anything with a railing, I'm well enough, but I don't like to lean over it much because of that 'getting sucked over' feeling. I hate roller coasters, not because of the speed or motion, but because I feel that I'm going to fall out of the car at the top.

The worst thing I ever had to do was climb onto the roof of a 3-story building from a bouncy 30' ladder that was sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck, and still about 2feet too short to make it up to the roof edge. I did that, but it took a while and I went *really* slowly.

It's funny, because I've ridden in open-cockpit airplanes while doing aerobatics, and wasn't phased in the least. Another time the pilot dove straight down from 20,000 feet and pulled out about 50 feet off the deck, and I was like 'cool!' For some reason, that's not the same feeling of 'height' for me.
I'm the same... I'm absolutely fine in airplanes and what not, but anything that is high, yet connected to the ground, scares me. I was in the WTC before it went down, and I was afraid that someone would push me through the viewing glass or that I would inadvertently (sp?) fall through... Even the second story of the mall scares me. :D

Also, Six Flags gives me a few good shivers... I also feel like I'll plunge out of the car if I look over the edge. Peering over the edge of the top of a tall water slide is also scary.

Ladders are scary too... the wobble too much. Ugh.

I saw the film men of honor and the submarine scared the crud outa me, huge heafin sub about to hit your cable leading to the surface then been dragged alone by it, its a film about the first black naval diver to enter service and to become one of the best divers ever. good film but the sub was the one thing that scared me.

Hmmm, it seems interesting that those of us that are somewhat afraid of hieghts that are still attached to the ground. Seem to be most afraid of structural failures.

For example: In Las Vegas there is a casino called the Stratosphere. It's a 1000 foot tall structure. At the top of it is a observation deck where you can lean out on the glass and look straight down. I fear the glass will break. Also at the top of this tower is a roller coaster and another ride called the "Big Shot." This ride looks like a four sided scaffolding or radio antenna that has 4 seats on each side and it catapults you another 250 feet straight up at 4 times the force of gravity and then sucks you immediately back down at 0 gravity. All the while you are outside and exposed to all the elements. My fear was that this thing was just gonna malfunction and I would be catapulted straight into the sky and have an awful long time to think about the whole deal on the final plunge to the earth.

One time when I went to Toronto to visit some family, we went up in the CN tower. They have a large section with a glass floor looking striaght down. My uncle basically pushed me onto it and I freaked out. That's probably the fastest I've ever ran. It was quite embarassing(sp?).

OA

I have a reverse fear of heights. And not so much a fear either, just an involuntary physical reaction.

I could stand on a skyscraper and look down with no problems. But, put me on the ground looking up at the top of said skyscraper, and I'll start to lose my knees and get really dizzy.

Very weird. :thatsodd:

That's exactly what I was noticing too... I'm not at all afraid of being in a plane, but always when on/in something connected to the ground. And it's weird, because I know that the structure won't fail, but I'm still afraid-- For example, at the WTC, I knew that the glass was thick enough to withstand a huge amount of pressure, yet I was still afraid of somehow going through it. And, at the Empire State Building, I was afraid that the bars would give out, even though they obviously wouldn't. Also, when you have to sometimes use "portable stairs" to get out of an airplane, I'm afraid that the whole darn thing will just crumble beneath my feet...
