Photoshop help

I recently got Photoshop CS5 and I was wondering if I could get some tips/help. I have done the lab method, but I still feel there is more to help improve my pictures. Also what are exactly the shadow and highlights do under smart sharpen? If you could recommend a website or an article please do. Anyway thanks for the help.

psdtuts.com its a good start.... but for photos adjustments i recommend lightroom... i use it to set the toning and the shadow and highlights....
