Hey guys, I've been looking through this forum for a while, and I seem to have a problem with viewing pictures. Some pictures show up fine, but many of them just show up as a little blue box with a question mark in the middle. I then have to right click and open the picture in a new tab/window. I can still ultimately view the pic, but it is getting really annoying. I haven't seemed to have this problem on other sites and forums. I'm on a Macbook. I regularly empty my cache, and this seems to help a little, and other times just reloading the page will make more of the pictures show. I can post a screenshot of the little blue box if needed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

P.S. I just remembered that this problem has occurred with smilies, too. Instead of a smilie, I get a blue box. :ouch:

You may be having some connectivity issues with GTPlanet's content delivery network servers, but I have not seen anything out of the ordinary on my end. Just to confirm, you're having problems with images that are integrated with the site layout (icons, smilies, buttons, etc.), not images that people have included directly in their posts, correct?

No, sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough. Mostly the problem is with pictures people post, and a few times it has been the smilies. There's never been a problem with GTP buttons or icons. When it happens again I will take a screenshot.

That happens when the image has been deleted by the host, usually because it hasn't been viewed in a certain period of time. Everyone gets that.

Ah, I see. Those images are hosted on other websites and are beyond my control, so if they are moved, deleted, or protected from hot-linking then they will not be displayed here. This is a common problem in older posts such as the one you referenced, and is a good example of why it's always best practice to upload images to dedicated image hosting services such as ImageShack or Photobucket before including them in your forum posts.

I know that the removed pictures won't show up, but my question is about the ones that will open in a new tab/window. The picture is there, it just doesn't load on the page. Refreshing the page sometimes makes some of them show up, too.

When your browser requests resources for a web page (in this case, images), it sends along the address of the referring page. This is how hot-link prevention works: as a webmaster, you can configure your server such that it will only display an image when your site's address is listed as the referrer (so people can't leech your bandwidth). If you view the image via its direct URL, no referrer is sent to the web server and the image may be shown, depending on the server's configuration.

Of course, once you've downloaded the "real" image, it's going to be stored in your browser's cache, and when it comes across a page that references that file, it will pull its contents out of its cache and allow you to view it within the context of the page where you weren't able to before.

I can't say this is exactly what is happening with the specific images you are asking about, but there is a good chance that's it.

OK, that makes a lot of sense. I guess I'll just have to keep right clicking, oh well. Thanks for the help Jordan.
