Pirelli to alter shape of rear tyres in 2012

Seems to make sense, the tyre wear is pretty high and making them last just a shade longer certainly makes sense.
The bit that amused me was they plan to make them 'boxier', and all I could think of was.

They are going to need more suspension travel for that thing and then some bigger wings to keep it on the ground. Maybe some suspension for the drivers seat too.
 
Ah, Pirelli is wanting to make the contact point flatter, rather than rounded (like a motorbike tyre).

I was getting slighly confused until I read the article and understood what they meant.

So long as it doesn't make the tyres last as long as the Bridgestones, it should be ok... hopefully.
 
This also makes sense from a business point of view. Its not very good PR for Pirelli if their tyres can barely do 20 laps of a 5km circuit.
 
If that were the case though, Pirelli I'm sure could make a tyre to last an entire GP or 2 to be able to say "our tyres last" in a business view. I think it says more how they were asked to make a tyre degrade at x and y (hard and soft) rates, and right from the first race they have hit the nail directly on the head.

Pirelli were asked to make tyres that would wear out. When you have a company that is interested in good PR, you get Bridgestone making a soft compound that will last for 52 laps of Monza. The changes to the Pirelli tyres aren't going to be radical. They most certainly not be visibly noticeable. What they are trying to do has nothing to do with business relations and everything to do with making tyres that will produce the best racing - they keep changing the compounds to respond to changes in the car, and also to find that sweet spot where multiple strategies are equally good. Paul Hembrey has repeatedly said they want tyres were two- or three-stop strategies are equally viable for the drivers.
