I now have "Position", "Lap", "Best Lap" and "Total Time" permanently etched into the top of my nice 50" plasma screen. The circles around instruments in bumper view are also visible. Really sucks.

Anyone else seen this?

I am wondering if PD could offer some options to avoid this. Such as changing color or position or something.

How old is your plasma? My panasonic 42" will have a small amount of temporary burn-in, but it goes away after a few minutes. Try to just put it on regular TV or a movie for a while, see if it corrects the problem.

Every night before you go to bed, set your TV to a standard definition channel, and then activate the sleep function for 30 minutes or so. I say standard definition because it'll be a little fuzzier, and will help with reducing the image retention.

That is not burn-in unless proven!

It is called Image retention, it usually happens on plasmas when a certain amount of pixels are left running the same colors for an extended period of time, although image retention disappears after some minutes or regular image ( ex: Normal cable, or a DVD/Blue-ray ).

A friend of mine fell asleep with his ps3 running on xmb with his not so new plasma running ( plasma was a Panasonic he got if i am not mistaken beginning 2010 ), guess what, Image retention was there and CLEARLY visible, still it disappeared and the plasma screen uniformed just like you expect from a "more recent plasma technology"

My Plasma is 5 years old and does the same thing after a long session. Watch a TV show it will be gone fairly quickly.

It does not seem to go away quickly. Will try to let it run for some longer with some movie.

Thx guys, hope you are right. I hate being afraid of playing too much :)

Don't worry mate, Burn-in is mostly a myth nowadays, you should check on your plasma menu for an options that will flicker the image every "x" minutes, this is pretty much helpful to avoid Retention.

Maybe you can tell me which Plasma you have and i will see if i find anything to avoid Retention for your model.

To be exact it is a Panasonic TX-P50VT20E.

It has lots of options, but I have not found any for flickering.

I don't know if this applies to the OP (sounds as if it does however) but all you guys buying these plasmas , taking them straight out the box, and working them to death without making one adjustment are crazy.

I want to make this PERFECTLY CLEAR:
Your (And this applies basically to the whole world) TV does NOT come set for normal viewing straight out the box. They are all set to draw attention to themselves in a brightly lit showroom surrounded by a bunch of other TV's set for a brightly lit showroom with a bunch of brightly lit TV's around them. You MUST turn down sharpness and brightness as a rule of thumb. That would be the bare BARE minimum.

Manufactures think of TV's as hookers, they'll do anything to get your attention. So they crank up the TV's. Do a google search for your set and the word "calibration" and you'll at least be headed in the right direction.

I'm on vacation, brought the PS3, and staying with the Family at my dad's sister's house, and she has a 50" Panasonic Plasma, and i notice after i turn it off, i can see some burn in, but by the next day it ussualy goes away.

Next we move on to image retention. This is an effect that is seen on every plasma TV to varying degrees and will either be noticed or not. This is not the same as panel burn-in and we would be surprised if anyone these days could permanently damage a plasma screen with normal or even heavy use. Image retention is different as it is not permanent and usually disappears in time. How long it takes to disappear is usually down to the make and model as some manufacturers' screens seem to be more susceptible than others. On the VT20 you have to look very hard to see any retention and we had to put up a 100ire raster to show the effect in the image attached. In that case the logo had disappeared within a few hours of continued use, with me checking every hour by re-showing the raster test pattern. In normal viewing, even straight after seeing it with the test pattern I couldn’t see any retention with programme material running on the TV from any distance. So while retention is there on the VT20 you have to go looking for it and it is unlikely to cause any issues for normal viewers. In fact I ran a second test before sitting down to write this section of the review with the panel now having about 105 hours on the clock and the effect was less obvious in this second test. It is certainly not an issue on the VT20 when compared to the latest plasma panels from other manufacturers covered by AVForums reviews.

Like i said before, burn-in is a myth nowadays!

Read the whole review here, you should find intresting stuff related to your plasma, and maybe use the forums to see if there is a flickering image option to avoid retention.

I play in 3D sometimes, and you have to turn up the brightness or gamma a lot there, because so much light is lost in the glasses. Probably the extra brightness makes image retention worse?

Besides I agree and have turned it a bit down (for 2D), not really calibrated though.

Under Setup and Anti Image Retention make sure you have Pixel Orbiter set to Automatic, that will shift the picture ever so slightly to help with retention.

You can also display a scrolling white bar from the same menu which will help clear up the retention.

I play GT5 a lot on my Panasonic G20 Plasma and don't have any issues.

what you have is image retention.

my plasma does the same thing. just watch something else for a little bit and it goes away.

heck, when I first got my plasma tv, even before the break in period, one day my dumb friend left the tv on with a static image on the screen while I was at work.

by the time I got home almost 14 hours later, there were, what looked like a burn in. I turn it to regular tv and left it there while I went to clean up.

by the time I got back, "burn in" image was gone. (needless to say my friend was never allowed to touch my tv again!)

anyway, nothing for you to worry about I don't think. :)

Well, to put my two cents in. I have a brand new Samsun plasma HD 3D tv 50". I played like 4 hours doing online racing not thinking about burn-in. When I stopped, i noticed that the HUD was still there. So, i looked up my tv online and found that it has a "screen wipe" option. I had to run it for almost two hour to get rid of the HUD. So, it's not a myth and they do add some option to keep it from happening. Like for mentioned, flicker, but it only works with an image that been still for four minutes. Not true for the HUD. For what I do is, after each race or online race, i run the screen wipe option. Good luck on your seach for getting rid of your HUD on your plasma. By the way, screen wipe looks like a black bar that fades to white and moves slowly left for as long as you want.

No problems with my Kuro. Does your Panny have an orbital mode? It moves the image around ever so slightly. AVS Forum is the place to go for top notch calibrations and discussion specific to your make and model.

it is a myth...

What you got is called Image retention, burn in is permanent burn to the pixels, they will never react again which causes a pixel to display the color which burned it forever.

If the image disapears wit that screen wipe, than it is Image retention.

Burn-in nowadays is a MYTH! due to advanced plasma technology.

If you have over five hundred hours on you plasma you just have retention. Run something colorful for a few and that should fix it. If you have a Panasonic id recommend an SD card and some pictures of color, red green blue etc. Let it run these on a slideshow to break it in.

This thing is more common with new TVs that have not been given any break in. Avforums and Avsforums have guides how to break in a plasma. And be sure to put that retention guard on next time playing.

Ahhh a fellow Kuro owner. Are you using "Game" mode on your set? If so what settings do you have? Are you using that app, i forgot the name, but let's you hook up the lap top to it? Also do you have an Elite? Again , if so what settings are you using.

I've got a Pioneer Kuro PDP-428XD.. Never had any permanent burns on it even though I've fell asleep many times with BD/DVD menus running etc. It's there when i turn of the TV, but it goes away in like 30 sec.

Pioneer is king when it comes to plasma. Just thought i'd mention it :)

my 42" panny plasma does not get burn in even when i leave the same static image on for hours on end. i did take the precaution of "running my plasma in" when i first got it.

i hear a few hours of static fuzz on the screen is good to clear image retention.
