PlayStation 2 is Not a Console

Playing both sides of the fence, Sony has successfully argued in European courts that their PlayStation 2 console isn’t really a console at all, rather it is a computer. You might ask why Sony went out of their way to do this and, as always, it’s all about the money. By winning this lawsuit Sony will receive millions upon millions of dollars in refunds by the European Customs Agency. Here’s the actual quote explaining everything:

The Luxembourg-based Court of First Instance rejected the decision by the European Commission to classify the Playstation as a games console. Sony argued it should be a computer -- and thus eligible for a lower duty -- because of the processors inside. The judges agreed with Sony that the classification "should be carried out on the basis of the components of the item, and not its purpose.” Sony spokesman Nick Sharples in London said the company was considering applying for customs rebates, which he said could amount to "millions" of dollars.

Oh, they’re only considering filing for rebates worth millions. How dandy.

It's even less of a console with the PS2 Linux Kit.
Or - Just add a harddrive with your network kit, a keyboard and you're good to go surfing.. Try that on a console ;)

What, may I ask, are you using in the way of software to "surf"?
Ok.. So I should've put quotes around surf... But still - There's a software package that comes with the online adapter. This is used to sign up for the online experience (or whatever it is called), register your screenname (Flerbizky is taken. Forget it kids).. Stuff like that. But after you're done, you use it to access "some-name-or-other" Central, where you can browse around the site with hints, help, news. All sorts of boring stuff.. It's surfing with no external links.....

Whether it is a console or a computer, for me, it is a black box which I could spend hours with it and using it to play DVD movies. :D
