Playstation Dead?

I was 8:45hrs into the 9hr endurance race and my PS3 turned off by itself(had been on for the last 16hrs). The light was blinking red, tried the controller to turn it back on and it wouldn't turn on. I had to physically press the button like four times for it to come back. I hope i'm still under warranty.

This has got to be the worst ever feeling for anyone playing this game. half way through an endurance race and your ps3 implodes.

what version of ps3 do you have?
 
My PS3 did it at the end of a French race.
If you know someone with a heat gun and some thermal compound it can be fixed.
Everyone's PS3 will do it eventually.

Really weird for a Slim to do it.
Wonder if PD actually tested 24hour racing enough.

Even if they did, consoles simply aren't made to be left on for 5+ hours unlike a PC where there is lots of space for vents and airflow.

Doesn't mean I won though my Phat ps3 has been going strong for nearly 3 years now (boxing day) and all I do is regularly clean it and used pressurised air in order to make sure there is no dust trapped inside. I had my PS3 on for 36 hours earlier this week and whilst i was watching the fan never went any faster then it's lower speed whilst i was around it :)
 
These endurance scare me, that why I bought a little fan just for my ps3 to keep it cool...what ever game I'm playing fan is on spinning
 
I will never play endurance with out my pc cooling fan plugged into my PS3 blowing nice cool air at my PS3.

I use pc cooling fans for everything my PS3 has one sitting behind it, my G25 has a fan from a pc power pack on it and i have one blowing cool air at the back of my TV.
And i must say it really decreases temperatures with both my PS3 and my G25 only bad thing is that you find your feet getting rather cold off all the air blowing round excellent in the boiling hot summer not so good in the freezing cold winter lol.
 
The cooling system in a fat PS3 is really good. I've had mine for 3 and half years and didn't have much dust in it.
It was just the thermal compound on the cpu and gpu dried out and caused it to overheat.
 
The PS3 has overheated and if you try to start it back up it may turn on but will soon shut off in the same manner so don't bother. Better to fix it now before it has the full blown YLOD failure.
The same thing happened to my phat 40GB a couple of weeks ago about 4 hours after blowing out the dust with compressed air. Sony uses the typical cheap white thermal compound between the CPU&GPU and the heatsink which will break down over time due to heat (go figure).

You need to disassemble the machine and reflow the solder around the CPU and GPU using a heat gun; be sure to use a good quality silver thermal paste when you reassemble. You can find full instructions on Youtube to step you through the process.
 
thanks for all the info. But PD and Sony really fu<k this one up. Is not healthy for someone to play that long and for the PS3 to be up that long. Now I have to go out and buy a third console. 1st console = 600us 2nd console = 400 and if I go for a third it would be another 300 which would be more money spend than almost all my other consoles combine. (xbox360, wii, n64, SNES, Nes, PS, PS2).
 
My Slim 320GB Model has been on now for 14 Days Solid without a break as i'm doing the B-Spec Marathon .

Fist time i've heard of a Slim dying .

I hope you get it fixed under Warranty 👍

I play mine in my cold but dry basement with nothing around it to restrict airflow. I remember doing the GT4 endurance races with no worries at all on the PS2, those things were a total work horse.
 
what really pissed me is that I never play for long periods and when I did it just all went to s-it. I was like 15min from finishing the races and now I have to play the nine hours from the beginning

That does suck but I think the venom should be squarely aimed at Sony not PD. I don't think its PD's responsibility to produce a game that will be "easy" on the console.

FWIW, Sony depends on their equipment failing once the warranty is up as it leads to repeat business. If Sony was interested in fixing the root problem they would use a high quality thermal paste at an additional cost of $1 per console...this however would seriously impact overall sales of new consoles and service/repair.

I did drywall while doing 24hr Nuremburg a few times... popped the disc out and it looked like someone was hiding cocaine in my PS2. LOL

Gave away the machine when PS3 came out. I'm sure it's still works.
