Actually, that's a fair idea - especially a 00-05 Taurus with the 24V DOHC engine. The only problem is finding spec on them - sunroofs and leather are rarer than hell on a Taurus, especially for a good price.

He found out about that or about some of the other problems on his own and decided not to get it. He's still looking.

Sorry to say it, but the pushrod Taurus engine is a poor purchase. Not only does the DOHC engine perform better, but due to the better technology, it actually gets better fuel economy - despite having 45 more horsepower. The best part is pricing - Blue Book says the DOHC engine is worth just $465 more, a $465 you'll easily make up in two or three years because of the fuel economy gains.

Otherwise, it's a good car.

Why is it such a bad purchase? It makes comparable power to the competitions 4 bangers and a bit more torque.

I'd definitely go for the Impreza. But if he can get something new, how bout one of those new Eclipses? They're not too expensive, and fast in the 0-60.
