Disagreed. There's nothing less enjoyable than having your car break down on the closing laps of a long race after all that strategizing to get to the front of the pack. I would be OK with tire deflations, but only if they happened for a reason (i.e. running over sharp debris on the race track). Same goes for all other fixable problems that drivers encounter during race days, like the loss of a wing.
As discussed earlier in the thread, it's generally agreed upon that random terminal failures should not be implemented. However, if your driving style is very aggressive or you run up on the curbs rough for hours on end--you should expect some sort of mechanical problem (tires, suspension, bodywork, etc.) But yes, as you said it wouldn't be fun to race that long and have it end just like that, so perhaps a limp back to the pits system for repairs, kind of similar to iracing as others have suggested? Thoughts? Discuss and debate.
