I'm looking at a replacement ofr the miata, and i've always been into cop stuff. What do people here think of the idea of getting an ex-cop interceptor, or more specificallly, an ex-detective car? Does anyone have experience in this area?

I'd actually recommend one used over a normal Caprice because you can usually get them as a bargain (same goes as ex-taxis). Do be aware, though, that it's very different from a regular model - plastic rear seats, unopenable rear doors, and there's sometimes a cage between the front and rear, even on 'detective' models.

Only get a used Caprice - it's just a waste on a used Crown Vic, considering they're cheap enough used without having to get a high-mileage ex-cop version.

Nevertheless, if you were really interested in rear-drive large sedans, I'd recommend a 94-96 Impala SS over anything...

Well, I'm mostly interested in them because I'm a big police buff, and I think it'sd be cool to have a police car. Plus, the interceptors all have better suspension and engine, too.

And, well, I was thinking that it'd be really cool to mod one up as a drift car (track only. i'll never even consider racing on the street, now after what happenned)

Not hugely, particularly non-patrol versions. Mainly, the better suspensions and (slightly) upgraded engines were on higher-performance cars of the fleet such as Mustangs and Camaros.

They recently did a test of police interceptors and vehicles. (last month I believe.) I was amazed at the slow performance and handling characteristics. I would have thought that the cops would need something a bit more perfomance oriented. I guess not.

Dam Boom you beat me to it :lol. Anyways, here is my 2 cents on this issue. If you want the upgraded engine and the whole nine, my suggestion would be to get a used city Crown Vic. It has the 4.6 Cobra engine in it. You can pick these up if you search good enough for like 1 to 2 grand. Then Get yourself a mid to late 80's mustang. I would prefer the Lx do to its sleeper nature but a GT is fine and then voila you'll have yourself a 300+hp 80's stang that will be very fast :D. The mustang should be in the same price range if you know what to look for :D

they are cheap, here in NC theres a place in Charlotte where you can pick up camaros, mustangs, crown vics, caprices etc for next to nothing.
