I have a question regaurding portable police scanners. Are they illegal to use? I want to get one for an upcoming "Gumball" event I will be going on and I want to be able to make it with out being pulled over. I have a fuzz buster already and I want that extra layer of protection.

I've been told that you can get the NASCAR radios and they will work the same as a police radio as long as you are on the right frequency. Also will these scanners/radios work as CB's as well.

I'm willing to pay for this because like I said I'm going on a "Gumball" type race and I don't want to end up with a ton of tickets. And before you ask I will not be taking the Blazer, I'm going with a buddy of mine in an Audi S4.

If there is a problem with this thread let me know, I don't want to own the AUP.

Ya I want the radio, I already have one of the best fuzz busters on the market (Passport 8500). But I need a little extra security.

A CB should work, and they are in no way illegal. Police scanners are also completely legal if you don't want to do any talking. If your going to go gumballing, I would suggest a CB radio anyways, though.

Well I have a CB radio, I just don't want that big attenna on the back of my truck. Do they make handheld CB radios that don't have a ginormus attenna that sticks to your car?

You could always grab a different style of antenna for the vehicle. The "Wing" shaped antenna (much like those on the back of limos) work well with a CB. Grab a Scanner as well, and just tune into that frequency with your CB. That way, if you do get pulled over, you can stash the scanner and change the channel on your CB. The cops will be none the wiser.

Do CB's pick up police frequencies? If so, why do police scanners exist? I know there are designated channels on CB for emergencies, but I don't ever remember flipping past the police frequency on CB... I could be wrong.

The uber expensive ones truckers carry do, but I'm not sure if all of them do. It would probably be a safe bet to pick up both a scanner and a CB though.

Police bands aren't anything different than typical trucking bands. You're better off using a scanner to detect the information being sent over the waves, but to prevent being caught in the act, you use a CB and say it's nothing more than a CB. Cheapest way to get out of a scanning violation.

That's not true at all. Cops use digital transmissions, at least in most major areas and highways, it's called "trunking". You need a quite high-end scanner to pick them up, the good news is that scanners can be had quite easily at RadioShack.

What Takumi said. Most police use digital signals now so it's much harder to pick up their frequencies. If I recall correctly, they change frequencies every-so-often as well.

both can be illegal in some states.... if it's illegal in a state, there WILL be a posted within 1 mile of the border... either way, use em, and if your pulled anyway, hide em

I think there are two that switch off every year, once in US, then next summer it's in Europe, then the next it's back in the US, etc...

A Gumball Rally is NOT an illegal street race, but rather a rally across the country. You don't get anything for winning, and its just meant to be a fun drive across the country. But of course you are going to speed. The Gumball I'm doing is from Detroit to Grand Haven to Traverse City to Mackinac to Soo Saint Marie and back to Detroit. So its a Gumball of Michigan.

3000 miles long??? where is this? who holds it? how come ive never heard of it? lol

Oh my god, 30-40k pounds just to enter? holy crap. I thought at first it was an "underground" meeting of rich people to drive as a big group for a very long time.

It is, they really don't encourage you to race, but they know you do.

I remember watching the European Gumball to the Spanish GP.

The guy in the 2CV had so many scanner, scramblers, seekers that it was hilarious watching him pack them away when he got pulled over.

So Blazin, what sort of cars are expected at the event?

Audi S4 which I will be in, a stage 2 Ion Redline, stage 2 Cobalt SS, Camaros, Trans Ams, Mustangs, my buddy with his older M3, Impala SS, stage 2 SRT-4, Typhoon, and some other pretty basic cars. It's not meant to show off fast cars, but rather just rally across up and back across this great state. Although, we will be driving fast.

I'll more then likely be in the S4, but part of me wants to take the truck on the rally.

You have to be kidding? 300hp in a sport compact is nuts, his car is fast as hell.
