Was this car actually produced?
I have a hard time believing it.

Yess, there were a limited number of GT1 road cars produced.

From Wiki...

'Regulations for the GT1 category stipulated that to be eligible, a total of 25 cars must be built for road use. Porsche developed a fully road-legal version, dubbed "911 GT1 Straßenversion", and delivered one in early 1996 to the German government for compliance testing, which it passed. The engine had to be slightly de-tuned to meet European emissions laws, although its 700 hp (522 kW; 710 PS) and dry weight of 1,100 kg (2,425 lb) proved to be more than adequate; the vehicle could accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 3.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 378 km/h (235 mph)'

Wow. Thank you for that. But I thought the 911 was only in the GT2 class? How long did they do the GT1 Class run?

Predecessor cronologically, but I don't think they share anything major.

One produced (open to correction), uses a twin turbo flat 6, designed for racing, yeah shares alot with the Carrera GT....
A Porsche looks like a Porsche, tho they really dont share much at all detail wise externally.

Personally I prefer the 993 GT1. Those 996 headlights ruin the car.. Both the GT1 and regular 911's.

Unfortunately the headlamps are the only thing my Porsche shares with a GT1

The 993 GT1 will always be one of my favourite ever cars. I never liked the 996 GT1 Evo, and the completely new GT1-98 was quite nice too.

The carrera gt was made 8 years after the gt1. And the gt1 was made for racing too, so the carrera gt is no more to the gt1 than an slr is to a clk-gtr.

The race version has a really sick livery, I remember fondly the pain of trying to apply it on my Tamiya Model kit.

There is a pre production 911 GT1 from 1996 located at an exotic car dealership not too far from my house.:)

This 1998 version, the only one produced, was at an event I attended last year.

^Is it still white, or is the photo just projecting it as light blue?

As for the topic, there are 50 (possibly even less today) from '96 & '97. Came in a few colors, mainly in the same shade of silver, so they all look like the same car.

Most of them actually pass through Auto Salon in Germany. A '96 model in Champion livery comes up for sale every couple years.

That 1998 one is still white to answer your question, it's just the photo. Apparently that snap was taken at Bathurst, must have been doing the rounds in Australia last year.

We have at least one here in Hong Kong.

Not sure if this one is the same car...
