Pre-installed Garbage, or is Vista a HDD whore?

So I got my laptop for my b-day back in May and haven't really done much with it. Mostly because I've had exams and if I started uploading crap onto it and such it would become a big diversion.

But looking throgh it today I find that an amazing 36GB of my hard drive have already been filled. Not it's not a major issue (250GB formatted) but all I've done is put MS Office Student on it and very few CDs and no games to speak of as of yet (though I have become abit of a Rome Total War addict again.).

So, is this one of the big issues people hate about Vista, or has Sony gone overboard on stupid pre-installed garbage?

I seem to remember it can generate a lot of log or temp files.

Have you tried running disk cleanup?

*checks his own Disk Cleanup*

Wow. 1.99GB of "Hibernation Files"? I don't use hibernate.

Nah sorry guys your all just hitting the maintenance sort levels of memory. And no I don't have a huge porn collection either. Perhaps a defrag is needed after all the crap that was pre-installed, I'll do it when I need my laptop less I suppose.

Especially now I suspect the fan has packed in on our desktop as it shut it self down, feels warm, and only ran for a short time when we left it to cool.

When I first got this laptop it was taking up about that much space. This was just a pure Vista install, nothing else. I presume the manufacturer installed it so it's partitioned that much space towards Vista. No idea why. Not sure if that's true though.

Hmm, good shout. Well it's not at an issue for now as I'm not exactly struggling for space.

Thanks for the help guys 👍

the good news is that Vista apparently limits itself... my PC's Vista install takes up around 15-20 Gbs... and it rarely goes past that point. I have about 500 Gbs, so it's no big deal. However, you remember when XP started going a bit slower when it had less than 500Mbs of free space? Well Vista starts going slower when it has less than 8Gbs, so keep an eye out for that one.
