First off, my system specs.
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=86345

I have several Linux LiveCD distros here including Damn Small, Freespire, Ubuntu, and Knoppix, but none of them are working right on my new PC. The DVD drives boot the discs, but after you select what you want to do from the LiveCD boot menu (run as LiveCD in my case), it locks. In all but Damn Small it freezes at a loading screen, but DSL says that the Knoppix filesystem cannot be found. All of these discs worked fine on my old PC, so I have no idea what the problem could be.

Try booting Ubuntu in 'Safe Graphics Mode'.

Like Integra Type R said, you'll get a lot more help from a [distro]-specific forum.

Dougiemeats: Tried that, didn't help.

Skip: I'll try that now.

Edit: I can't seem to find one for Ubuntu.
Edit2: Downloading a server edition of Ubuntu now.

Hmm, just poked around the web a bit and it seems that this is caused by some buggy device drivers.

I guess in my case the smp build didn't load the faulty drivers, possibly?? Anyways, I have had to pick the smp build on my dual core machines.

In any case, you might want to try Mandriva/Mandrake, which is much more mature than Ubuntu. I think they have a Live cd. It worked on my Athalon X2/Asus mobo.

The live CD for Madriva (Skip's suggestion) is called 'Mandriva One' if you decide to look for that.

Also, why don't you try the latest development version of Ubuntu? If you're not planning to install it, Edgy Eft might be suitable for live CD purposes for now.

Edit - Question for skip: I still don't understand why the live CD won't boot.

Shouldn't the i386 Dapper still boot even with his Core 2 Duo? It won't be optimized and may not recognize the second core, but it should still boot right?

But will Edgy still give me the same problem with having a dual core?

I may call a friend of mine tomorrow and see what he thinks. He currently has a 2.8Ghz C2D prototype running his Linux system. Lucky bastard!

It should, indeed I have had regular Linux builds work on a dual core. It's probably hanging up on some faulty device driver. In the smp kernel it is more likely that it recognizes all the device correctly because it is built specifically for the new Intel instruction sets, I guess? I'm speaking from experience more than anything else.
