I have a laptop issue. My wife was looking at office supply things on here today. She got to a certain page while looking at something and the screen froze up.The blue circle icon was still spinning, but it would not do anything. So she just hit he off button, but it did not shut off. Then she proceeded to just shut the laptop. She told me what she did when I got home from work. When I tried to start it,it started up ok,but then I got a pop-up "Microsoft windows update" I went to click on the update and I got an error code of :

80072EFE

It will not let me update windows.I keep getting the error code message 80072EFE everytime I try.

What did she do,or did she do anything at all to the system ?

One other thing.Upon startup on the main screen,I now get this message :

C\Users\administrator\AppData\local\etayifeg.dll

under this it says :

specified module could not be found

I tried looking at things online, but all they want to do is sell you something. Do I need to buy something or download something to remedy this error code ?

Help please,thanks.

The unit is a Toshiba L355-S7915 , running Vista, and a Norton 360.

The first thing I would try is disabling Norton and then try the update.

Also, doing a search for etayifeg.dll got me nowhere. Are you sure that's the file name?

I tried disabling Norton and it still does not work.I even ran a comprehensive Norton scan.It said it fixed 4 items, but not this one whatever it is.

Positive on the file name "etayifeg.dll" as well.

Thanks Road_Dogg33J 👍

Sounds like it may be a lengthy process, but I will give it a shot tomorrow when I'm not so wore out. Thats all I need to do is add more trouble to this.:nervous::lol:

Tried , no luck , same problem.

According to this thread, you can try deleting the catroot32 folder.

Can you go to the microsoft.com site?

I deleted catroot2 folder as per instructions.I still have the same problem.

No,I cannot go to the microsoft.com website.Either by clicking the link that tells me I need to update or by manually trying to type it in.My screen says - "Internet explore cannot display this page" when I try, but yet I can go everywhere else on the net with no problems :boggled:.

This is as close as I'm going to get without starting a new thread.
Start a new thread. You are allowed to, you know. This isn't the GT5 forum, and this is your problem with your laptop, which is an entirely different problem to the original thread you used.

Disabling Norton won't work, it's such an infectious piece of cack that it has no Off option, you have to remove it and then use one of their own tools to completely remove it from your system.

This is your first route.t

Go straight to Step 4, then get an AV that works, given you're using Norton, I presume you're happy to pay for an AV, I'd recommend Eset's NOD32, it's effective, resource-light and works, unlike Norton.

I know it's a PITA as you have paid for the license, but putting Norton on your PC is a bit like trying to take a dump in a urinal, you can do it, but it's advisable you don't.

The error code is a Firewall related problem, it's basically Norton stopping internet access. This could be related to the .dll you've mentioned, this is of slight concern to me.

For this problem I'd recommend a scan with your new anti-virus, use Spybot and then SuperAntiSpyware aswell, though SuperAntiSpyware is very resource hungry. Download, install, run it and then remove it from your PC.

Hopefully that will solve the problem with that .dll, it isn't being recognised from my own memory, resources or indeed google.

PS: Can you tell I don't like Norton? I think it comes across well...

Did you try the Kaspersky solution in there? Rebooting the modem/router?

Sure did, followed everything to a " T " . I had a glimmer of hope for a few moments. After doing this,I went to the microsoft link that kept popping up,telling me that I need to update. It actually started to do something. The green bar at the top of the link was actually moving from left to right. It did this for a few minutes and I was thinking "got it".Several minutes later,it stopped and the error code popped back up. (facepalm :ouch:). Back to square 1 again :grumpy:.

I will try your solution as well.I have nothing to lose but some time trying .

I'm a bit confused though  You say it's Norton stopping internet access. Can or will Norton stop access to only Microsoft ? As I mentioned before,I can go anywhere on the web and do anything with it right now, except access Microsoft for the updates. Is it a conflicting issue between the two of them ? I've never had it happen before, until my wife used it that one night, when she said it started acting up. Perhaps something with the new update that Microsoft is trying to get me to install ?

Is it only when you try to use Windows Update? Can you go on to the MS site manually?

And yes, I'd expect Norton would be causing that problem.

I still get this upon startup : C\Users\administrator\AppData\local\etayifeg.dll

Yes the error code only pops up when I try to update.
I cannot access Microsoft by the quick link or by manual entry.

Everytime I try to access the Microsoft website by manual entry,my screen goes blank and says " internet explorer cannot display this page".

Hitting the quick link,it acts like it wants to update for a few seconds, then the error code pops up,stopping the entry / update.

The thing is,it's probably something simple and stupid that I'm overlooking.

I've only found one other instance on the net of a similar dll, and that's only ifeg.dll. Interestingly also running Norton.

Given that the only google result for that dll is this thread, I believe that you need to manually remove it. This is a risky process, but neccessary to remove this piece of spyware.

Have you run both Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware?

If so, follow the instructions on this link below, but be cautious and follow it carefully and stringently.

If you want to try another piece of software. This did a good job for me recently, as in today. It detected something the other programs didn't. Though you might get a couple of false-positives like Combofix.

Norton related, very interestng. I heard the same thing from a friend tis weekend.I fooled with it all this past weekend and got no results.I downloaded, uploaded, uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, all of that good stuff, all for not, Ooops,I did get one result, the startup mesaage about "etay1feg.dll" is now gone, but I still cannot access Microsofts website ether way (link or manual). Also I have noticed that the laptop is now operating slower than normal, considerably slower to be exact.

Thats what is on the computers at work.I was looking in to that. Dumping Norton and using this program instead.

To be honest,I've reached my wits end with it :grumpy:.Today, while being stopped at a red light uptown,I noticed a sign on one of the shops windows -

" we will fix any computer problem for $55.00 "

I'll give you one guess who's getting a laptop to work on tomorrow . I will also have them install the program you brought up Road_Dog33J.

I'll keep this updated as to what they may find and post it in here.Just in case someone else may encounter the same problem.

Update - this needed to be done a while ago,but I forgot ,ooops , sorry :dopey:

It turns out a piece of malware got in the computer and was causing these issues. It wasn't until I had to deal with another friends computer recently (troubles installing Microsoft windows updates) that I had installed this program which worked perfectly and removed error code 80072EFE on a Windows Vista system, and brought it back up to full function.

I hope this helps anyone who is running Vista that may be encountering a problem with error code 80072EFE.

http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip I tried it before and it did not work for whatever reason, but this time it took and cleared up all the issues.

Advance System Carefree is an alright program though. Do you think that Ccleaner does the same?
