I have an issue with my TV which I'm HOPING someone here might be able to shed some light on. I posted it on AVForums, which is one of the best places to post something like this, but I thought I'd give you guys a try anyway. ;P

Me
Hi all

I'm posting here today because I need a few suggestions on what to do with my TV. My Dad and I are annoyed with Currys because they cannot see a fault we have with my TV, which makes it almost unusable.

Basically, I bought the TV around 2 months ago, mainly to be used on my PC, my Xbox and some television. I noticed on the PC channel it would occasionally display a picture with green lines at the top and the rest being millions of green dots. I thought this might have been a PC or some other hitch so I just turned the TV on, then off, and it would go away for the rest of the day. I use a dual-monitor setup with my PC, with the other monitor being perfectly fine (in pictures below), so I didn't think it was a PC issue after a while.

I went on holiday for a month, came back and used it for a week and the problem started to become more frequent. Before, it used to do it about every 10 times or so I turned it on, now about 5. I still thought it was just something I had to put up with so I left it for another week.

Then, it dramatically became worse. Now it does it on 50/50 chance, and now affects the Digital or Analogue TV channels. Here's some pictures of it:

PC Input:

Antenna (TV) Input:

(this is sometimes COMPLETELY pink, just this time it decided to squash the picture randomly 50%)

I need to point out that the TV doesn't do it after it has been turned off for a while - it needs to be turned on for a few minutes before it does it - it then does it consistently. So basically it's intermmitent.

We contacted Currys, a so-called engineer came out and said it might be a problem with my TV ariel when it clearly did it in front of him on the PC channel as well. He asked me to use the Xbox through HDMI and it did it on that channel as well (after having to turn the TV on and off twice)

It was sent away, and just this morning, Currys has said to us that they don't see a fault with the TV, and are ordering a new stand for it.

I'm sorry, a new stand? There was NOTHING wrong with the stand! They've probably damaged it then?!

Not only do we think they damaged it, the so-called engineer who saw it clearly saw the fault on 3 different inputs, so how can they think there is nothing wrong with the display?

We are not sure where to go from here - any suggestions guys? This is definitely a display problem right? My 4 year old Samsung LCD has been flawless.

Thanks.

I have an LCD LG TV and I have never had a problem with it in the 3 or 4 years we have had it, mind you it is 42" so it is a different model and size. What they are telling you is unbelievable though, a new stand? Wtf?

Key issue there is with the word 'Currys'. A company based on immorality, run by people who couldn't find their own behinds if you slapped them with a bit of HDMI cable. I've been so disgusted with them this year that I'm now just boycotting them (and the rest of DSG retail) completely.

The only advice I can give you is not to drop the issue. The problem with having a bloke come round is that (as you'll have discovered) they can just disappear back to their superiors and nothing will happen. Or the higher up people will just plain lie down the phone at you. Call them again, and if the same thing happens then just take the thing to your local Currys, dump it in front of them and refuse to leave until the issue has replicated its self. If they're particularly unhelpful, take it to another one.

Yeah - what they said on the phone may have been a lie. Maybe they didn't order a stand at all and are just saying it to us (even though the repair receipt CLEARLY says "display fault"). Won't know until I get it back I guess.

And yes, going to the store and dumping it in front of them seems to be the only option right now. Saying we have the right for a proper repair or a replacement under the Sale of Goods act 1979 might shake them up a little bit. Maybe. :p

The problem with intermittent problems is that they're not always reproducible in the shop within a required time frame. I used to work as a saleman/tech at an IT Store, we had this one customer come in saying:

"Sometimes after you've used the computer for a couple of hours the keyboard stops working"

Obviously in your situation it's more obvious and the 'engineer' has seen it. But for a full TV replacement (Which your problem basically requires), I'm guessing they'd have to replicate that fault to a supervisor, and it may not have happened that time.

You just need to be persistent and yeah, trot it too the store, replicate it, and get every person in the store to see that it's happening.
