Problem with PS3 starting up while the ethernet cable is connected.

Hey guys. I have a problem and I couldn't find it here or anywhere else on the internet so I decided to make a new thread. Yesterday, I started up my PS3 and I had GT5P in it. While it was loading, I touched the eject button, and it stopped loading. Then I put in LBP, and then when I restarted the PS3, I got a message saying that the Hard Disc is damaged and that it is going to restore it. When it was 100%, the PS3 restarted and then it only showed the starting up screen, and then the background, but with no single icon on it!

After a few tries with starting it up again, I pulled my ethernet cable out of the PS3 and the game started up properly to my relief, and I could play LBP without errors.

But when I put my ethernet cable back in, the same thing happened again, and I got the error message. So basically, I can't go online, but only play the games offline.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well all i can tell you is that your problems started when you ejected the disc while the game was loading...there is always a message in every game saying that quitting a game or turning off the system with the HDD light is flashing is a big no-no.

I know that, but it still works offline, so I don't think that's really the problem. Plus I don't know if the yellow light was flashing at that moment.

I forgot to tell one other thing that may have caused the problem, I was downloading a demo from the PSn store, ratchet and clank. I chose to let do it in the background. But I forgot about it, while I was playing GT5P, and shut the system off.

You might want to see if there's a partial file of that download or something that you can delete, maybe it's trying to resume that and that's causing it an issue.

Try doing a firmware upgrade again, could probably use that recovery console they added in 2.50 to force one.

You could try holding the standby button down for 15 seconds to reset your PS3. I think you'll get a beep after seven seconds but keep it down longer to reset.

Since 2.5 it seems that you can do more and access the recovery mode via the method above.

Please read the link, it may help you.

How can I do the firmware upgrade again? Do you mean recover the whole PS3 system? Because then it has to format, and all data will be lost.

I tried that 15 second thing, but it just shut off.
But when I start it up it gives a beep like normally, then after like 4 seconds another beep. If I release then, it asks about HDMI. If I wait longer, like another 4 seconds, I get 2 beeps, and then I have several options. I did system recovery but the I had to install time and so forth again. I'm now going to read that link. Yes the link shows all the options I get after I hear three beeps. But which one do I have to choose? When I choose systemupdate, I have to place the medium where there is 2.52 version or higher. So I guess that one is not the right one.

Thanks for all the help so far. 👍

I'd try doing restore default settings, then reboot your PS3 as normal and see if you xmb icons show up, if not then try restore file system - reboot as normal to check again, then try rebuild database and Restore PS3 system.

You could try removing the hard drive (it's quite simple to do) and start the ps3 up, shut down, then fit the hard drive back. Sounds like something is hanging but if you can't get your PS3 to work properly through trying the recovery mode options then call Sony.

I'd want my PS3 working before adding the firmware. Try adding the update to a usb device (download it from sony via your PC) on a last resort if you don't already have the latest update.

When you remove your ethernet cable do your icons show? You just mention your able to start the game after removing the cable. Can you access download management to cancel anything pending or delete some demo's you downloaded recently, or select settings and reset your internet settings.

I can do everything you can normally do without internet when I remove the cable. So all icons show. But I don't know where I can go to the downloading management.

It might just fix itself whenever the next update is installed, because it sounds like something system-related got corrupted. You could also try deleting the game data for GT5P, since that is probably the only other data that was in use at the time when you turned it off. Back it up first, of course.

Seriously the best advice I can give you is to wait until the next Playstation Update comes along which shouldnt be too long a wait, this way it will completely rewrite the firmware and hopefully remove any corruption. If you can deal without going online for a few weeks I would highly recommend this route because messing around with other stuff could brick your console completely then theres no going back.

When the next update comes goes to the regional site of your PS3 (country you bought it from) and download the firmware to PC, transfer it to USB Key and install onto the PS3 for there.

Great news for me! It works again, I can go online again. :)
I was looking for background downloading at the PS3 site, and then it said, for managing the background downloads, go to the internet section on the PS3 and you can choose it there. Then I canceled the download of the demo (which was 95%) and then I could go online again! I just played LBP online for the first time! :) It shouldn't have happened that my PS3 got stuck because at the PS3 site it says when you shut the system off while doing a background dowload it should be good, so this may be a glitch. But it's solved now. Thanks very much for all the help I got! 👍
