Problems with PS2 and GT4

I hope that this hasn't come up before, if it has, Mods please merge with that thread.

Anyhoo: I have noted that my PS2 (new style) won't reliably launch GT4.
I often have to restart several times to get the game to launch.

I was panicked that It was the console. However, all of my other games launch with no problem. Anyone else having this problem?
BTW, I have cleaned the disc, and keep the inside of the console clean.

Any ideas for a fix?
 
This has been covered before, and I'm not gonna say it. But I've had the same problem, and I just restart the ps2 every nowand again. But it works fine eventually.
 
Strange, perhaps the laser is weak from constant usage?

I head dual layer games burn out the laser abit quicker than usual.

I have actually quit playing GT4 as a result of my player not being able to play it.

At first I thought it was my old style Modded PS2. Ok, seems logical that it doesn't want to load up. So I go out and buy a new slim-line PS2. Game still won't launch. Then I get a new copy of GT4 and all is well so I return the slim-line PS2 and play GT4 for a couple more weeks until the new copy won't read now. I gave up and just play PC games now while I wait for the PS3 to come out.

You're not alone.
 
Check the very outer, and then the very inner ring of the disc (only the areas where the laser reads). Look for scratches, smudges, etc. and clean them up.

If that doesn't work, it could mean your PS2 needs adjustment. Call Sony at !-800-345-SONY and tell them you have "DISK READ ERRORS" and they'll fix it for free if you ship it to them. You'll get it back in about four or five weeks.

Sometimes, my GT4 disc wont load, I clean the fingerprints off the outer edge, and then it works fine. Give that a try, and hope it works for you.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to ask. Do some movies that have a second layer not load well, or at all? That means it's the PS2 giving you problems. That's usually the first sign of a DISC READ ERROR problem.

All of the other games we play regularly, about 10 - 15 of the 20+ games we have, play fine. Only GT4 is not working properly. I have to restart the console several times before it works. Once I do I don't have any more problems with it. I just find it odd.
I have cleaned the disc, blown the dust out of the console etc.

That happens. I have a lot of problems with DREs. Oh, blowing dust out of the console is not a good idea. It just ends making things worse, so don't do that again.

So, no problems with the second layer of DVD movies? That's usually the first sign of trouble with DREs with my machine.

I don't know what else to tell ya', dude. I'm stumped.
 
There's only one real solution to this problem.

You're going to have to replace your copy. =/

I don't use the high pressure air. I just blow the visible dirt out with low pressure (mouth supplied) air.
You'd think the new model PS2 would get less dirt in it with the PSone Style lid...
I just plan now when I'm gonna play GT4, as it takes 2 or more tries to get it up and running.
If I get really frustrated then I bag that and go right to AC4.

I'm in that same boat. My PS2 is not reading GT4 at all, no matter how many times I reset it. It also isn't reading most DVD movies. I've cleaned the lens manually several times, and even have a CD with small bristles designed to clean the lens that I run through the PS2 from time to time. I've tried about 80% of the possible 64 gear positions that set the angle of the lens. I've cleaned the GT4 disc manually and it has no major scratches. Still no luck. The strange thing is that the PS2 reads GTA: San Andreas (albeit there are sections in the game that do not read or take a very long time to read), a game that has notoriously given me (and alot of others) DREs. GT4 is not the only game that it's not reading, unfortunately. I've given up for now and suppose I'll have to wait until the PS3. But since I'm a college student with no job, I won't be getting that anytime soon. I'll probably get it when GT5 comes out, by which point I will no longer have a need for GT4. And just think......I never even made it to the Extreme League or got to do one endurance race :guilty:.
 
--UPDATE--

After a thorough cleaning in which I i scrubbed the discs with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol then let them blow dry under a fan a few minutes, both GT4 and the other game I was talking about are working fine now. And just when I was ready to give up. Now that I got my steering wheel fixed and GT working again, I should finally be able to make some more progress in the game.
 
I heard playing DVD's (All kinds) constantly with the PS2 will wear out the laser faster than if you just use the PS2 for gaming. (I've never played GT4 or DVD's on the slim PS2 so it may be different)
 
This happens to me with several games. The simplest solution I've found is to turn the PS2 vertically (if you don't already play that way), or even turn it upside-down.

Just experiment with the orientation of the console (sometimes laying it flat works if you usually play with it vertically), continuing to hit the "reset" button, and it'll eventually work.

It's a bogus problem, though -- my PS2 is the first console I've ever owned that has done anything like this (excluding the inherently trouble-prone front-loading NES), and all of my friends' PS2's are doing it too. :rolleyes:

It may be a problem with the move from solid state consoles (i.e. cartriges and no real moving parts) to disc based ones.

My first generation (orignal launch) Playstation will only work up sidedown, due to the cooling issues with the drive. Works fine mind you, just needs to be up sidedown.

My PS2 (again PAL launch) has been 100% fine, but I am now on my second X-box due to a drive faiiure on the first (my friends did the same).

Its only resonable to expect a higher problem rate with the increase in moving components, and while I have had problems I would not say any of them have been unresonable.

Very true, but I have had very few problems with the PC CD/DVD drives I've used over the years, and I'm one of those people who usually leaves discs in the drive even when they're not being used.

I haven't used my Gamecube enough to give a fair comparison to the PS2, I must admit, but I certainly haven't even had a hint of a problem with its drive, or any other part of it. Maybe I'll use the Wii as often as I did the PS2...
 
I really hope that PS3 won't be so faulty as PS2,The PS2 I have now is my second,and if this one goes DRE on me,I think that it will be SONY-No more my money for YOU!
