So, is the Chrysler Viper GTS-R effectively the equivalent of a GT2 machine and the Viper Competition Coupe is a GT3 spec machine?
Well yes, but actually, no...
The Viper was built as an FIA GT2 car, but this was in the late nineties. When GT1 collapsed because of spiralling costs, the existing GT2 class became the new GT1 (with a bit more aero freedom and a bit more power), with existing cars all eligible from the year 2000. The old GT3 class (hence the earier Marcos Mantis GT3 comment) then effectively became GT2, but this was renamed in FIA/SRO series as N-GT (but not in IMSA or at Le Mans, where it was GT2).
As for the 2nd generation Viper: It was more commonly seen racing in GT3, but this was to a modified form, as the 'new' GT3 ruleset didn't really appear until 2006/2007. The Viper was built to an odd regulation (can't remember which), and ran as G3 in FIA series from 2004. It was one of the existing models selected to bulk out the new GT3 class from it's inception.
Hope this helps! (people who know more feel free to correct me)
