We may be looking at the difference between UK licensing laws, that seem to be okay with fake track names like Northampton (me, I'd have preferred Brackley!) skirting licensing, and the undoubtedly tighter Japanese regulations over the same issue...

S4 may have assumed that, if Northampton was kosher, then Okayama was too.

It's worth noting that they ran into similar issues with Suzuka back on Project CARS, to resolve that they had to fundamentally change the layout of the circuit. It's all speculation at the moment but I wouldn't be surprised if this was a similar situation.

With all due respect to the developers, they are struggling to get year one out as it stands. Maybe they should focus on getting correct license deals in place for year 1 before worrying about more.

Oh 100% the effort needed for a 2nd year dlc should rather be spent on just general QoL improvements and CPU/GPU optimisation

A year 2 should have almost been a given since there is a year 1. It would have been different if they just labeled it as "DLC" or " 1 year of expansions". To me year 1 implies there will be at least a year two, maybe even 3 and 4.

So what's the speculations on year two? I think it will be similar to this year 1 with 4 different class expansions with another 4 tracks. Perhaps classic DTM/touring cars, Formula-E, 70s Trans-Am and maybe European Le Mans series with LMP2 and more GT3 cars.

It's never as clear cut as that, art developers are likely also working on other areas too, this is a very small team after the post launch cuts, estimated to be a team of fewer than 30 based on estimated numbers and percentage of people laid off.

Which also brings me to the other point, money, every costs money, development time, licensing, new DLC packages etc, people's time. If they have money to be working on year 2 DLC then perhaps that money would be better spent on what has been mentioned above, optimisation, physics, online etc.

ELMS might be tricky given the existence of LMU. Open wheelers are probably unlikely, I seem to remember a dev comment saying their physics engine isn’t suited to them. Year 2 would probably just be more of the same GT focus but filling in gaps.

Unlikely. Motorsport Games & the ACO announced back in 2021 that they were extending their exclusive licensing to 10 years, so anything ELMS related is probably locked to LMU til' 2031.
Motorsport Games, a developer, publisher and esports ecosystem provider of official racing series throughout the world, and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest have announced an important update to their joint venture agreement. As a result, Le Mans Esports Series Ltd will create, develop and publish video games, in addition to esports, based on the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans and FIA World Endurance Championship.

This update supersedes the initial agreement that Motorsport Games and the ACO signed in 2019, extending it to a ten-year rolling licence

Would straight 4 at least be able to get LMP2/LMP3 cars separately and not under ELMS if they wanted to? I'm not really sure how these licenses work.

You don't remember well. Dirt Rally 2.0 never had Pikes Peak or hill climb in general integrated at all. The Pikes Peak exclusivity for Gran Turismo was confirmed not long after the release of the first Dirt Rally game and prior to the release of Dirt 4 in 2017.

Official statement, cites a "sensitive concern".

Jeez this whole game's just been an unmitigated disaster since it was announced. I've never seen anything like this from a game in recent memory.

Good question. I suppose it could hinge on if the cars are exclusively used in the ACO, thus they fall under the ACO's umbrella? AFAIK, the Gen 2 LMP3s were used beyond ACO series, but according to Wiki, the four Gen 3 LMP3 cars are all built to ACO regulations & to be used in ELMS & ALMS. Similarly, it states the current LMP2s are limited to a Le Mans spec in the WEC & the ELMS teams can switch between 2 aero kits.

Edit* The current LMP3s may be exclusive to ACO with wording describing the 4 current cars as, "the new ACO Generation III LMP3 built car set eligible for the category".

Interesting, I figured maybe they could get the cars separately through the car manufacturers to bypass ACO. similar to how EA has the exclusive F1 license but kunos was able to get the Ferrari sf-25 separately for ac evo.

Maybe they can get 1 or two, I don't know. As far as F1 goes, I've always put stock in the internet claim that games can license at least 1 F1 car from a season, but no more or less.

I thought Paul Coleman spoke in an interview about Pikes Peak and it got scrapped in the early stages of DR2 due to licensing by PD.

If I am wrong, I stand corrected!

Maybe super early stages but lots of things get cut over the natural course of development.

Still a shame Polyphony never put it into a game though, but that’s a topic for another day.

My best guess is that the “fictional” track was too close to the real thing and they’re trying to sort out a licensing deal and royalties.

The PMR Discord server is really full of fanboys, and it's not allowed to criticize the game or the developers in a more incisive way. They're forgetting that this game delivered very little on its launch promises; it has a ridiculous multiplayer, a boring career mode, IA doesn't stop at the pits to change tires or refuel, etc., etc., etc. I could spend hours here talking about the points that need fixing in the game. For me, the worst part was removing the GT500 DLC a few weeks after launch without explaining why.

It's concerning the direction this is taking. We go from open communication and we ff'ed up to unclear to no communication. If this is a sign of things to come we can be happy if this game even survives year 1 😞 There is so much great stuff in there but the situation is concerning, once more 🤷

Their marketing team has been bad since forever, except for trailers (thanks to JonZ). Typos in announcement are not unusual (just look at the tweet above, why is there "toolbox" there, works on discord, not on twitter, still doesn’t bother to fix the emoji), innacurate info, weird replies on twitter, version of the game are a mess (release with 1.5 and market 2.0 after 4 months 🤨) and more (anyone else remember Project Cars 3 where cars and tracks were revealing and unrevealing themselves constantly on their website?), and that’s for planned stuff. Now unplanned stuff like the removal of the GT500 or a delayed patch, it goes from bad to terrible.
