I have been waiting a long time to build a cockpit. Thought I would share the beginning with you guys. It is called Overkill because every piece of material is way oversized. Crap! OK, after I figure out how to attach pictures I will post some. Back to the build!
OK, I read the FAQ and have put some pics on photobucket.

Here is the mount for the rocker play seat.

This is the base for the whole cockpit.

This is the difference between the stock speaker in the back of the Rocker and the replacement Kicker subwoofer.

Plywood insert for base\foot rest.

Kicker subwoofer installed in built in speaker box.

The seat I am using is an X-Rocker. They are available from Wal-Mart, Target and various online vendors (New-Egg, Amazon, gamechairs.com, etc).

They cost between 120 and 180 dollars (American).

The chair has to have power and has its own audio controls on the side. The woofer is OK but is very small for a low bass driver.

These are a little hard to find as they are often listed under furniture or (as you can see) Kitchen?

I got mine at Target after christmas when they were on clearance and got it real cheap. If you are willing to wait and lurk around Target after January you can probably get one cheap as well.

If you squint just a little it looks like a nice.....boat anchor. I've seen air mattresses that look more comfortable than that bargain "captain's" chair. And armrests, mind you ...how chic !! I have no doubt you'll love it. :)

Scotty

I have had this seat for several years. It can be made more comfortable (for shorter folks) by putting a pillow on the back and holding it with a t-shirt. The arm rests are usually folded up out of the way. They do, however, make a nice place to rest after a long race.

I have never found it to be uncomfortable, just to damn heavy to move!! The speakers mounted in the top of the seat actually add to the ambient atmosphere, the woofer (original one ) added some tactile events, but sounded like crap to people sitting behind the driver.

All of this balances out with the improvements I have made and the low cost of the seat originally. (<$30). :dopey:

Is your boat anchor comment about the whole thing, or just the seat? I squinted at both pics and went out to the shop and squinted at the thing from several different angles and do not see the resemblance.

Here are some new pictures. Slow going as other projects keep jumping in front of this one.

Still Life in the garage.

We got the pedal mounts started tonight and will take some more pictures after the shifter mount is set right.

Thanks for looking!!

That is a modded G25/7 am I right? Looks sick! Same with that setup, That sub must be fun!

It is a G27. That particular mod (the paint on the front) is really easy. Follow the guide to remove the top and there are two screws holding the "grill" on. Just pull the screws and mask the recessed parts and prep and spray the outside. I also painted the inner panels white to give it some contrast.

Having owned one of these and used it for racing for most of a year I can tell you it is very uncomfortable and not good at all for your back. Just sitting in it is fine, but to actually spend a decent length session of racing in it you'll will be hurting before long.

OK! New pictures.

Side view of the whole thing in one place. At least it is set up so I can make adjustments and get the comfort factor started.

Crappy out of focus cell phone picture of the front. :yuck:

Detail shot of the pedal mount. The angle adjustment goes 90°. More than can actually be used. (OVERKILL!!!!)

Lots of holes to move pedals around.

The laptop table.... well now I guess it is a steering wheel stand!

Tomorrow should be final assembly and testing.

UPDATE!! Functionally finished! Raced a bit after pushing to a finish at 4 am.
Front shot.

Table and pedal detail front.

Trying to get a shot of the front of the pedal plate. 14 gage cold rolled steel.

Table top detail. Drilled a big hole to pass all wires through the table. No more wires hanging over the edge.

Back shot. The box that the shifter mounts on opens and there is room inside for tools to adjust the pedal spacing, game boxes, and extra DS3 controllers. Thinking about putting a charger in there.

Stowed by the book case. The S O is ok with it so far. Let's hope she doesn't decide to reread all of those books.

Parting shot! (Inspired by scoddee, whose nautical reference inspired the boat type nomenclature) This is what the final christened name is. RS stands for Racing Seat. For any one wondering why Minow is spelled with only one 'n' do a google search for Newton Minow. Hopefully you will catch on to the circular reference started by the anchor crack.

First, nice job. 👍 Second, nice name. Yeah I think I get it: Gilligan's Island's producers trashed Newton for his criticisms by shipwrecking the S.S. Minnow and you're kinda trashing my remarks with an excellent build. Glad I could inspire, lol. I really like the use of nuance in your naming process. I guess you'll remember me at least as long as you have the rig.:)

New pictures!

Added some bling and some carbon fiber.
2011-11-22_12-48-02_125.jpg

Had to repair some wires after doing the fix for the center problem.
2011-11-22_12-47-48_317.jpg

Pedals got the carbon treatment and the http://www.apelectrix.com/ pedal mod.
This mod REALLY helps the brake pedal feel and makes controlled braking much easier.
2011-11-22_12-59-21_290.jpg

Set up chilicoke's E-Brake mod. Works great but if you have it on during calibration it disables the circle button.

I would estimate around 120 lbs (60kg for you metric folks). It wasn't designed with weight consideration in mind, hence the wheels. All of the steel except the 1/2" square tubing is 14 gauge (0.074 7 inch = 0.189 738 centimeter) so it is fairly heavy on its own. The frame with the wheels on it alone weighs around 40 lbs (20kg). Like I said overkill. It is still easy to move around, but you have to do it one end at a time. :)
