Okay, so, my senior class project is due very soon, and I though now would be a good time to submit a few questions to everyone at GTPlanet. I'm not putting this into the "Ask GTP" section, because I want this to be more of a discussion instead of a simple question/answer deal.
First, I'd like to introduce my project. Two classes of the 6 that make up my school day are semi-connected. We, the two sets of students in said classes, are known as "Senior Project" class. Basically, we are an honors class that also has to organize and execute a project for the benefit of the community. We are a sort of prototype class, the second year our school has done this. They're testing it with us before the county adopts it and integrates it into every school. I know there are many schools and school boards in other states that have already fully put the projects into their systems.
I have named my project Project R.E.A.D., meaning Read, Educate, And Discover. It is focused on reading encouragement for young children, but can also be used to help troubled readers of any age. I decided that the best way I could help my community was to help it help itself. Because literacy has been on the decline, I thought I could help in this area, pushing preventative measures for the pattern of illiteracy that usually arises in middle and high school. The mentality is that, if children can learn to really comprehend reading material and actively seek out new material, they won't become bored with books and will therefore continue to grow intellectually and literately.
I've made it so my project consists of a short PSA-type of film accompanied by a live presentation, a discussion, and a plan for the students' future actions and habits. I'm not trying to craft a genius-army of my community's new generation, although that would be ideal. The goal is just to at least do something to increase the enthusiasm for reading. If it affects just one kid in a positive way, I'll consider it a success.
That said, I'll put these few questions below. Please take the time to post your opinions, answers/responses, and any suggestions you might have about my project or what else I can do to improve it.
1. Why do you think reading is important?
2. What do you enjoy most about reading?
3. Why should kids read books rather than or in addition to viewing other media?
4. What advice would you have for children regarding reading and learning?
Thanks in advance. 👍
Oh, and, by the way, I will post my film as soon as it's done.
